Driving through Kettering last night, I noticed a relatively new camera in town - painted all blue. Now, Northants cameras are supposed to have at least a flash of yellow on them as they are part of the camera revenue scheme - what is the legality of a camera without the yellow bits?? As it was placed after the other cameras were painted, why is this one almost impossible to see at night (from 4pm - 9am!!!) Where would a motorist stand if caught by this camera?
I have written to my MP in the past about the cameras, but had a standard reply that didn't deal with the real issues. Is ABD the answer?
Cheers

They're a start.

I'm not sure about the legality of the issue, but can you imagine 'getting off with it' on the grounds the camera was wearing the wrong paint?

Personally I think not.

Anyone with definate info want to enlighten us?

The Kettering SCAMera may not be active yet. They have recently put one up on the A428 in north west Northampton which also hasn't got yellow on it, but it looks as if the lenses are still covered with plastic wrapping. The new A428 SCAMera is very cunningly positioned just over the brow of a steepish hill, so invisible until you are almost upon it. An alert driver will be able to spot it and slow down in time, but I worry about what is going to happen when the front car in a line numpties starts to descend the hill, spots the SCAMera too late and slams on the anchors.

On the A428 by Ryland-Soans Ford garage, Duston, Northampton. Another one is also being erected on the Welford road, Kingsthorpe, Northampton. Both of these roads currently have a 40 mph limit. Whats the betting it's dropped to 30 mph when the cameras go live. Three more are due to go up in Northampton soon, and another 4 or 5 in the county. As usual, if you come to Northants, BE CAREFUL!

I think you will find that only those cameras that are subject to the capping off system have to have yellow warning marks on them. If they are not part of that scheme, then they are allowed to remain covert!

There's another one just going in on the A45 Coventry, just after the two Truvelos that cover the Ryton Junction (travelling northbound). It's still grey, and the lenses are still covered at the moment. That makes a total of 19 static cameras (Truvelos and Gatsos)over a stretch of 14 miles of the A45. I can't see the point in this becasue 1) If the first 18 were effective in reducing accidents, why do they need another? 2) Nobody speeds through Coventry anyway, because there are so many blinkin' cameras!

What's the capping-off system?

not sure i understand what you mean with "they've won" .. but I would say that some of the 18 cameras on this stretch of road are justified on safety grounds, several of the cameras are on the approach to very dangerous junctions (I would argue the road wasn't designed correctly or hasn't been redesigned to cope with later traffic flows but that's another issue). At one junction cars have to cross the dual carriageway from a standing start immediately after a blind brow and anything which helps reduce speeds to a sensible limit is welcome here, indeed there's probably a case for a variable (to a lower speed) speed limit so that as traffic density increases at rush hour times the limit is reduced even further. I would also argue that the road could be adequately covered by possibly half the number of cameras - but i fully support the dangerous junction cameras and these could quite rightly be called safety cameras not cash cows... but why oh why can't the camera be joined by a sign warning of the dangerous junction ahead .. surely the accident prevention aspect is more important than capturing any speeding and / or crashing event after the fact? A picture of a crash is not better than preventing the crash!

This is the first camera on this road. Driving a thousand miles a week in Northampton as a taxi driver, I have to know where everything is! Admitting defeat, I now adhere to all limits.

although we'd all like to think that we could get off a speeding ticket because the camera is not yellow this is not the case.

those cameras will probably stay blue, like the two on the A6 north of bedford,

someone wrote into the local paper stating these are not yellow and are not in an accident black spot because the road isn't going to be open for a couple more months,

and the council wrote back saying: "under the new EU directive 'taking every bugger off the roads' cameras can remain covert and hidden and can be placed where we like when we like if they conform to some new scheme..."

unfortuantly i can't remeber what they have to conform to, but basically they can put them wherever they want, and can even hide 'em behind signs (like the ones on the A6) and paint 'em camo, and theres nothing you can do about it!!!
