Yesterday and Today the BIB were looking for dodgy drivers on the A100 on Tower Bridge
Saw loads of people getting nicked for Tax, Insurance etc but my favoutite was a lady being done for having front and rear fog lights on.£30 and a few points
One chap was arrested I think for driving a stolen car
Well deserved IMO
and not a speed camera in sight

It is great that they are doing that. I saw it the other day on the road heading east towards the Rotherhithe Tunnel - great. And in a bus lane that isn't used much - well done.

I suspect at Tower Bridge it must have caused a bit of a traffic jam... just as it did (massively) when the did it on the same stretch of road mentioned above, but on the westbound carriageway, just west of the rooundabout, causing a HUGE snarl-up in every direction, including the entire length of the tunnel. D-oh!

aha! This is indeed good news.
Why doesn't this happen more often? Hopefully they will use the new congestion charging equipment to clamp down on these kind of things as well. They have spent a shed load of money on it so they should make full use of it.
These kind of ideas make the roads safer for legitimate road users who maintain and insure their cars properley and I wholeheartedly support more action like this even if it causes traffic jams!

It happens frequently in various parts of London.. at least once a month in Peckham - they stop traffic in the one way system heaing towards Peckham Rye, nicking dodgy people in Datsuns with no tax.. has been going on for years..

sp60, surely the new congestion charging equipment will allow all unregistered vehicles' drivers to get off without charge, while the law abiding amongst us will be penalised?

Have seen this several times as I used to live near the south side of Tower Bridge. It's popular with me as there are far to many uninsured, untaxed pieces of crap on the roads causing grief, and raising premiums, for the honest folk.

I never met one. I'd certainly get pulled over, but it's not a problem as my car is (hopefully) perfectly legal.

Just doesn't look it...

The Peckham I remember would require an armed response vehicle and some brave coppers to do that kind of thing

Hmmmm, didn't think about that (durr!)
I s'pose they could use the system to check on cars and if they weren't kosha they could be flagged for attention to be picked up at a later date. Can't see this happening in reality tho. as it is far easier to simply charge the law abiding people as we are easier to trace I don't know what the answer to the problem is really. There are just too many cars around to successfully police them all I guess. Is very annoying considering how much car insurance etc. I pay to cover these people.

perhaps the owners of the roads should have the power to destroy cars that use said roads without being registered!

At last, great news.

I just wish they would start on people who drive at 26mph with rear foglights on in traffic, so you cannot see them braking, all over the country. With the bad weather over the past few day, hundreds of cars have now got their rear fog lights on, and they won't turn them off until their car's are serviced again.

Tim.

Indeed - the upside to the equation is that Plod doesn't seem to mind you progressing through that part of London at warp speed..

Well, I always used to anyway..

I used to be a bike courier and came across road blocks at least once a month.

They are usually set up on a one way system so you can't escape easily and involve running a gauntlet of government officials from a variety of agencies.

The procedure is usually to ascertain if you are working in any capacity and then to threaten/intimidate you into co operating with the National Insurance inspectors and Home office officials.

If you refuse to give up you Nat Ins no they will usually start taking your bike apart looking for "faults" and will keep at it untill they find/cause some.

I always had a legit bike, taxed/MOT'd etc and paid my income tax and so on. But having said that my cilvil liberties are very precious to me and I would generally refuse to co operate and start writing down the numbers and names (if I could get them) of any/all officials I could see.

The plod who pulls you over if the one to target, when he/she stops you immedietly ask why and get his/her number and threaten to make a complaint/ sue...

As the whole road block was rather dubious legally, after a few occasions the Plod learned to recognise me and would avoid pulling me over.

Whilst I welcome enforcement of the law against those who drive without insurance and so on, allowing fishing expeditions such as these undermines our basic freedoms and should be opposed.

Police dont have to give you a reason why they stop you.
As i found out one murky night.
Officer said, " the reason we stopped you, not that we need one"....pffffffff
