Yesterday 3.30 p.m., Hendon Way, London.....a 40 limit, dead straight, dual carriageway in perfect viz, with no rain. Muppet white van #1 piles into the back of muppet white van #2, who had just slammed on for a the clearly visible speed camera.

Now I am as against revenue cameras as everyone else here (just joined ABD for some lobbying ), but this is just just plain sh1te driving. We've got speed cameras (until we get rid of 'em). These w@nkers just have to learn to live with them.....they are not an excuse for crashing.

Of course.
But the theory is that speed cameras stop w@nkers from driving like sh1te, or at any rate stop them crashing when they do. If they have the opposite effect surely this is an argument against them.

If all speed limits were abolished (and no I'm not advocating this!) and white van man came a cropper doing 110 down the high street, nobody would say it's entirely their fault for being w@nkers, let's not change anything. Speed limits would be reintroduced immediately

I don’t believe that that is their argument. I think it is just that speed kills and therefore by reducing speed, we reduce deaths…..QED

No attempt has been made to examine the real problem, which is sh1te driving.

I must admit that I was having a bit of a pop at the ABD, with their (sorry…..our) headline about cameras causing the death of a motorcyclist (albeit very tragic) last week or the week before. Whilst I accept that cameras create another hazard, and a needless one, I just don’t accept that a competent driver is going to be caused to crash, without any complicity on their own part, by the erection of a camera. Putting a pelican crossing in, where one was not before, is creating another hazard….but it would not be accepted as a reason to crash.

We as drivers have to accept responsibility for driving the roads as they are, regardless of how right or wrong the driving environment is. Changing the driving environment is, I believe, every good drivers’ responsibility…….but that is a different argument.

Cameras cause danger through different effects. Even in Yellow they are still part of the clutter of traffic furniture. Most people who see them instinctively brake even if they are doing just under the limit. The car that brakes causes a chain reaction in a traffic stream and the classic nose to tail accident results with the initial braker driving off unaware.

Yup, I'll agree with that. For my own part, I like to think that I've noticed what the limit is and, when I come across a camera, make sure I'm driving within a few mph of it, upwards or downwards (usually upwards ...). Result? 33 years with no speeding convictions (yet!!)

PS. There is one camera in Highnam, on the Newent Road just out of Gloucester, that'll flash twice if you go past it at any speed over 30. I've been through a few times at 33-35, its flashed, bit I've yet to receive a ticket.
