Just been Gatso'd or have I ??
Discussion
A camera near me in Hyde does that. Goes off if detecting speed of 35mph or greater in either direction. They don't prosecute in Tameside, as the cameras are not, according to the local freesheet, compliant with the relevant guidelines. The flash just alerts the speeding motorist to try and get him/her to slow down. If there are no white bars I would have thought you'd be OK.
I've had similar situations in the past where a Gatso has flashed while I was heading towards it. On each occasion though I was not exceeding the speed limit, and the Gatso only flashed once as opposed to the standard double-flash.
You don't say if it was a single or double flash. If it was a single then I shouldn't worry*. I've seen a few occasions where Gatso's get triggered by all sorts of weird things, from council lawn mowers by the side of the road to an old man walking his dog on Southend sea-front...
Makes you question the reliability of the bloody things, doesn't it?
*Disclaimer: I am not held responsible in any way if you do receive a NIP through the post...

Hi,
Just been flashed by a Gatso from the opposite side of the road!!!
The camera and white lines were on the other side of the road and there were no markings or camera on my side.
Should I expect an NIP through the post, or not?
Rob
dont worry........
i travel on the A3/A205 it is ridled with speed cameras, i set the speed cameras off on the other side of the road every time i go along it, i naturaly slow down for the ones on my side...
what we should be asking is. if i go through the GATSO
within the limit, yet it flashes as some one in the other direction is speeding, will you get the ticket?;
this i am keen to know as this is my new gam i look to get the GATSO TO FLASH ON slow cars..
wrong i know but i just wonder how it all works..

No, because the speed will be shown as a minus speed therefore relating to the car travelling in the opposite direction, also the real speed can be confirmed by the white lines.
I had this the late one night a few weeks back, cruising up a gentle incline on NSL road.. doing 75 ish and got double flashed by gatso in the other carraigeway.. I did slow down a bit afterwards but only cos I couldnt 'kin see anymore.. was getting a bit bored with my retinas anyway !! no ticket though.
Im waiting to see if I get a NIP
Last sunday went through some roadworks with a temporary speed limit of 40mph, I was doing about 60mph and didnt see the camera.
On my way back not in such a rush , coming back through the roadworks on the opposite carriageway i spotted the camera warning sign and camera and slowed down. looked across at the opposite side where I had earlier driven a saw a camera hidden behind a large contraflow sign no wonder I didn't see it earlier - BSTARDS.
I dont recall seeing any white markings on the road though, if I get a NIP will I have any grounds to challenge its validity?

Part of Gatso's type approval is that they must be set for going towards or away by a little switch inside them. The radar signature is different in each case, and although they do a "ABS()" of the speed and flash you - they aren't calibrated correctly if they work the wrong way.

...unless they think that your offence was reversing, rather fast, down the opposite carriageway - backwards!
Paul
how can you reverse forwards??
By definition, reversing is the act of driving backwards. So therefore if you are reversing backwards you are actually going forwards. Therefore if you are reversing forwards you are in fact going in a backwards direction and so... BOOM

I only ask because the only times this has happened to me it has been a single flash from a double-flash Gatso.
I don't think you have much to worry about though. If the markings were on the other side of the road then that is what the camera is calibrated against.
