OK, several of my comments on here so far have been about how I think the speed limits are too low for certain conditions, and that I have, on occasions, travelled extremely fast on teh roads.

Some response has been that we are all hooligans, who wouldn't slow down no matter what.

Anyway, today, it was extremely foggy, and so I was not driving in my normal style. In fact, when I eventually checked the speedometer on the M25, I found that I was doing 40mph. This speed seemed to be the best compromise between making sure I could see far enough to stop, and not being rear ended by the lorries that were tearing past me (I was in the leftmost lane).

I'd been wondering recently if I was just believing my own justifications for speeding, but am now a bit more reassured that I do really drive appropriately for the conditions.

I have experienced the same on countless occasions. Makes you feel good, doesn't it, when you realise that you drive faster than most when it's dry and sunny but slower than most when there is limited visibility through spray or fog?

Makes you worried too, doesn't it, that so many other road users seem to drive at unsafe speeds in the trickiest conditions... in short, that a lot of road users are idiots?

To be fair(ish) to hertsbiker, I don't like it either when I'm waiting patiently in lane 3 to pass the inevitable middle lane numpty and someone cruises up the middle lane and tries to cut in front of me when he could plainly see what I was waiting to do.

A bit of a difference between that and just cruising along in lane 3 because I'm lazy though.

And if I was waiting patiently in lane 3 (as I'm meant to) and saw someone cruise up lane 1 and keep on cruising up lane 1 faster than me but without bothering those of waiting patiently in lane 3 (though perhaps moving into lane 3 in front of the idiot with the 1/4 mile gap in fron of him), I'd think "good for him".

I think music has a big effect on driver mood. On Friday night I was listening to Deep Purple VERY LOUD on the way home from work round the M60 and when the CD ended and I returned to the real world I found I was doing 3 figure speeds undertaking and generally being a bit of a tit (road conditions were good however and the last song was Speed King, which may have encouraged me a bit).

today on the A14, appalling road conditions, very heavy fog, most cars doing 60/70 when two cars shoot past at 90 plus, 10 mins later all the traffic ahead has stopped.....yes you guessed it the two wa***rs had hit each other spewing wreckage over two lanes

Same thing happens to me, but not 3 figures though. It's 'cos you play the airdrum with your right foot.

For safety reasons, I have to put slow crap on when in Tesco's carpark.
