Anyone work out why "my friend" just don't feel speed as much as some other people? he looks at "his" bike speedo needle flicking round the dial, and to be honest it just looks like a video game. ie, it doesn't seem to relate to the road going by.

Anyone else feel like this, or is this an insight into why some people don't have a problem maxing out their machine?

Ho-hum!

I guess it's the familiarity thing. I don't often go very fast on public roads so I don't get the speedo effect. But I do routinely explore the limit of grip when circumstances allow it. And this produces a very similar effect. Although I'm accutely aware of how much of the available grip I'm using up, and I feel every little twitch as the grip varies, I don't notice the actual acceleration at all. When I tried slicks on a track day it was strange to get that old feeling of cornering with your face pressed against the glass!

I was a bit concerned when I went on a track day last Thursday and found myself driving as if in a video game. Although I'm convinced that all that Sega Rally experience of years ago has got me out of at least one worrying situation on the road, I'm now convinced it will get me into trouble on the track... as it so nearly did as I tried to initiate a passing move part-way through Devil's Elbow and caught a 40 left - 400 right combo to complete my 360 and leave me feeling lucky. Thank God the road doesn't seem like a video game to me too!

Everytime I get onto an autobahn this effect kicks in. On my way back from Belgium on Sunday night I clocked a nice 280 km/h indicated speed.

Only thing is I entered a 100 km/h section of the autobahn shortly after reaching this speed, boy did my brake disks glow!

Perhaps once you feel like that you should try a different form of motorised transport.

Might I suggest a dirt bike, for some off road action?

It'll improve your road riding too.

I tried a 6.2 litre V8 yank motor. Lasted 2 weeks before I *had* to get another bike. I am totally in love with bikes. Anything else is a pale substitute, with the exception of VERY exotic metal (TVR?), or classic American cars (Mustang etc).

Good theory though, but winter is a great leveller. Next spring I'll be starting at a lower level than I am up to now - and yes, I will only go out on sunny days in winter. NO need to trash my bike.

Don't you fancy an off road bike though? It'll make your road bike feel tame by comparison.

I'm thinking of dumping the blade and just making do with the off road bike, (well, and the pther bike, and tha cars, but you get the idea).
