Not that relevent but this REALLY F**KS ME OFF

If its a modern Merc, maybe he's using cruise control? Then its more likely that he's doing 80.000000 mph and you're the one doing 79.999 then 80.111?
Maybe not in this case.
But when I use cruise control (yes, in my Merc) I am always getting people overtake then slow down, overtake then slow down. And they often give me funny looks. And I'm the one doing the constant speed. Hmmmph.

Fair point but this is not the case. I even sped up to 90 to lose him, then slowed down to 85 so I would still be going faster. Next thing I know he is at it again. He purposfully sped up just to do it.
This happens usually about once a week and only on the M5 with a different Merc and driver. Does this road just attract wers?
What is a driver to do!!!
Surely cruise control isn't dangerous, it's just idiots using it in an inappropriate way, same with speed, automatic gearboxes, guns etc etc etc...
If you're saying people are stupid and they can't be trusted to use a useful gadget like cruise control then campain to introduce a law banning it - I'm sure Transport2000 would like to hear from you too....
Seriously though, I thought that cruise control is by law automatically overridden anyway, so 'bunching' is a result of people being inconsiderate and badly trained drivers, not a button on the dashboard.

Cruise control is great, get on a empty (ish) M way, set it to 99mph and sit there fairly safe that your under the magic tonne and your then able to concentrate more on scanning for plod than speedo watching to make sure you don't start creeping up to the 120's 130's license shredding territory.
cruise control is dangerous
Nonsense.
Its dangerous if you misuse it. The whole car is dangeous if you misuse it.
I wouldn't buy a car without CC nowadays. If all cars had CC there would be far less motorway bunching because people wouldn't keep speeding up and slowing down.

Wrong. People wouldn't set it for the same speed - you'd still have to pass people so there would still be bunching behind slow vehicles. Hell, even if they did set it to the same speed there is a tolerance on speed detection (speedo error and tyre wear)
What is wrong with keeping your foot still? What is wrong with changing your speed to suit the prevailing conditions (weather and traffic density)?
Edited to be more terse and grumpy.

Could be that the extreme noise of my cars stops me "accidentally" going over the ton.
