Apologies if this is the wrong place for this, or if no-one is interested.

There are two new cameras going up on Prince of Wales Road, about half a mile down from Manor Top towards Meadowhell. One pointing downhill (hidden behind a tree ) and the other pointing uphill.

They haven't got cameras on yet, just the mounting posts there. Either that or someones nicked the cameras

I passed one in Manchester a couple of weeks ago. They seemed to have built a road sign infront of it.

They had a program on speed cameras on TV a while ago.

They reckon that they put speed cameras in front of roadsigns for the convenient power source that is normally with the sign.

Problem with that is that there are plenty of cameras hidden behind signs with no power running to them whatsoever. In fact to put them in they have blocked off the road and laid new lines.

Got to hand it to the powers that be. Driving down that hill in in pretty much any car in anything other than first gear it is difficult to stay below 30mph. Maybe the camera is well set up after all :not:. Should we really be travelling at over 30 on a dual caridgeway with large grass verges on either side ??

Thanks for the warning.

Oh, and theres a new one on Penistone Road that I spotted last night. A truvelo on the side heading in to town. I think it was just before the turn for the ski slope.
Again, a 30 mph dual carriageway with centre reservation, going through a non-residential area

Ah, Penistone Road. The route the traffic cars all use to get back to base. I was stopped there a couple of years ago for doing 50mph-plus by a motorcycle cop. Friendly chap just warned me: he said I was pushing it a bit, but 40's okay – that's what they all do. Wonder if that'll still be the case now...

More like a trunk road with Hillsborough football ground on one end, high rise flats on the other and industrial estates in-between punctuated with about 10 slip roads and as many sets of traffic lights.
You never get up to more than 30mph before you have to stop for the next set of lights anyway. I would say 30mph is more than justified.

Having said that, I don't remember many RTA's on the road which you could classify as serious enough to warrant a camera.

Yeah, but making that road 30 (and I don't mean the section from hillsborough park onwards) when Bochum Parkway is 40, is just plain ridiculous.

Bochum parkway cuts through a big residential area, which at least one school bordering on to it, and the trams adding further confusion (to some ....)

In contrast, penistone road has proper filter lanes to keep exiting traffic away from those travelling along, and has pretty good visibility all the way along.

If you need to keep speed down anywhere and enforce it more closely, I'd rather it was near schools than somewhere like that.

High-rise flats? I think you're on the wrong road. Penistone Road's never (as far as I recall) had any high-rise flats. Nine-tenths of it has no residential housing whatsoever.

As for the football ground, the road is always closed when there's a match – so that's not a problem.

Having said all that, I think the 30 limit is fine. The cameras, though, are another matter.

Yes, but Bochum Parkway hasn't got ten or so set of lights and numerous slip roads with HGV's entering onto it. Its just two roundabouts with one or two open slip roads and a couple of junctions. Granted its busy, but no where near as busy as Penistone Road.

I'm thinking of the flats just off Brook Hill roadabout, which really is Netherthorpe Road, but in reality is the same road as Penistone.
The ground is closed for certain periods during match day, but the ground and superstore generate a fair bit of pedestrian traffic most of the time anyway.

Hello fellow Sheffielders - yes spotted those new cameras the other day. Very sensibly placed on the inside of a bend as you descend down POW Road to catch as many people as possible.

Just out of interest I havent come accross any boxes with cameras in - am I not looking hard enough or is my Snooper complete pants?

The new ones are Truvelos - use a strip under the road surface to detect speed, rather than radar.
