Getting away with mispaced number plates - "ED 51MON"

In this era of constant camera surveilance (I live in the ULEZ and regularly use M25/Dartford Crossing) is it imposible to get away with a mispaced number plate? Will these cameras automatically fine you, or is it just a copper you have to worry about?

I'm not talking stupid attempts at changing a digit with a screw head, just altering the spacing e.g. "ED 51MON" instaed of "ED51 MON"

It isn’t impossible to get away with a misplaced number plate, but the chances of getting caught and dealt with are very small.
The suggested change you show will not defeat the ULEZ cameras I would say.

Emissions compliance aside, I'm just wondering whether a ULEZ camera will detect the misspacing and automatically issue a fine/ report to authorities (regardless of actual ULEZ compliance)?

Cameras will pick it up without any issues (assuming space between characters isnt taking the piss). I doubt they will send it onto the police.

Chances of getting stopped depends. I stop a few (a reason to stop, breath test/drug wipe/look for any other defects/offences...there normally is more!).

Misplaced plates can be reported to the DVLA and the plate can be revoked from use.

I would imagine (no inside knowledge) that as long as the camera can extract a reg. number and associate
it to a vehicle or a Dart Crossing account or whatever, then there is no requirement for any human intervention.
Cameras will be processing 1000's of plates each day.
However, if the camera can't extract the reg. number then that is (I guess) where a human needs to
examine the photo.

Maybe just leave the plate as it is. I know a novel concept to actually keep your plates legal.

I simply don't get why anyone would want to part with their hard earned for something that nobody else cares about, with the added bonus of being a plod magnet. Furthermore, if your car is on PCP, I understand there are various admin fees required from the finance co to swap plates....

This must be the best way to generate cash for the DVLA / exchequer;

Advertise a plate that means nothing unless letters are repositioned.
Poor sucker that buys it repositioned letters.
Sucker reported to DVLA.
Plate revoked.
Plate resold, rinse and repeat.

Small plates, small fonts, spacing was a big thing on bikes in the 90's/200's but it just caused too much grief, you would get pulled by the cops and then he'd find a race exhaust, dark visor and so on.

Nowadays I just stick to the standard size plates and spacing, one less thing for me to worry about and usually the big one that would open the pandora's box.

Same on my cars, just don't want the grief and to me it looks pretty tacky these days.

Or just change your name by deed poll to Ed51 Mon. It'll probably be cheaper than buying illegal plates...

Halve the space rather than move it to an incorrect position, get a dealer name on the bottom and the BS number in the corner. I found someone on ebay who did this, looks almost legal, well not really enough of an issue for a cop to stop you.

No plates issued by the DVLA are re-issued and resold (but there would be the original payment to retain upon a plate's revocation).

Some were reissued back in the 70s (IIRC) with supporting paperwork submitted for any such claims/requests, but that opportunity is long gone.
