EDITED TO ADD ITS A DD40, NOT A DD10 AS ORIGINALLY ADVISED

A work colleagues' son is coming to the end of a DD**40** Driving Ban and is looking at car's he can now insure. He's fully aware he'll have to pay a fair chunk to become a driver again, but some of the amounts are eye-watering....

Back Story :-

He got caught by an off duty Policeman after 'drifitng' round a roundabout on an industrial estate, on his own, very late at night. The off duty Policeman took his keys out of the ignition, which obviously pissed off the young man and said a few choice words to him, who only then said he was 'of the force'...

He's currently got a small family hatchback, and for life nor money can't get a quote on it and has been told he is 'uninsurable'. In spite of this, he has been quoted £3k for a BMW 5 series and about the same for a Qashqui (sp?)

Any ideas on what else would be a good choice for a 23 y/o [i.e. not a Nissan Micra] with a ban on his licence?

isn't a DD10 for causing Serious Injury through Dangerous Driving?

Thats what grates my colleague, she was sure at worst it would be a DD40 but as you say DD10 involves someone else, which this didnt.... She thinks he was made an example of....

Yes. There's got to be more to this or the OP has said the wrong code.

Certainly is, so there's much more to this story than we've been told.

I'd be very surprised at a driving ban solely on the evidence of an off-duty policeman. More to be told!

I am reassured its the correct code dished out to him. I said it sounded odd but looking at it all she says its definitely DD10

Orrrrrr ...

Someone along the line isn't telling the full story.

Either the son to his mother, or the mother to you.

Maybe, but back to the original question though -

Your colleague is probably too embarrased to tell you the full story OP.

What's the problem with a Micra? He wants something cooler at 23? Maybe should've thought of that!

On a serious note, there are probably cars that might appeal to him a bit more, but it'll be hard to work out what they are. Most people would be able to key their details into an aggregator site and change the car until they figure out the best combination of desirablity/cost to insure.

But I suppose he's having to chat to one of the specialist brokers who probably don't want to sit on the phone all day whilst he fires random regs off Auto Trader at them.

Mind you, £3k to insure a 5-series at 23 with a DD10 to declare sounds pretty good to me.

True, but what has happened has happened, he has to get on with it

We get along well, so I'm sure she's being transparent in asking me to help them out.

I too thought £3k for a (possibly an E39?) 5 series sounded OK despite his history...

£3k doesn’t sound bad at all since most people his age will be paying at least £1k to insure something decent.

I thought he’d be getting quotes in the five figures like some of the London Range Rover drivers…

He did get a quote, I think from his last insurers, of £30k to cover his Golf....

Try an MX5

My son was looking at one and the insurance is "competitive" as yuo can't have a car full of mates

I'd say £3K is fairly reasonable (in relative terms of course). I'm 42 and pay £1200 on a 3 year old 3 series with 19 years NCD and 2 x SP30's.
