Private number plate questions
Discussion
Hi all
My late mother had a private plate on her car many years ago. Nothing special, just a £250 plate with her initials etc.
When she passed away, my father took ownership of the plate. My father has now passed away.
I can't find any documentation relating to the ownership of the plate.
The plate was on my father's car. When he passed away, my dad's partner had the car put in her name so she now owns the car with the private plate on.
As the plate means nothing to her and I now have a car new enough to have his private plate, my late fathers parter now wants me to have the plate.
We do this change online but they want the V750, which we do not have.
My father has now passed, and the car in his partners name, so I'm not sure if he still owns the plate, or if she now owns the plate because its still on the car that's in her name?
I can't prove my dad used to own the plate as he's no longer here.
Does anyone know how we would transfer it off my dads partners car to mine? Would it be as simple as sending a letter to DVLA explaining circumstances?
Many thanks
Jim

The plate belongs to the car it is on. If the car belongs to your father's partner, so does the plate.
You apply for a V750 to take the plate off and transfer it to another car. You can do this online, using the V5.
As long as you have consent from your father's partner to transfer the plate, this should be fairly easy - just apply for the V750, get the plate off, put the replacement one back on your father's partner's car and put the private plate on your car.

Thanks. I didn't know it would be as easy as just taking the old one off online and then assigning it to me online.
The only other problem we have now is that it says online that the transfer off the vehicle is immediate so have the original vehicle number plates to hand, but my old man has chucked them and we have no idea what the original number plate is unless it tells you on the DVLA site once the transfer is complete.
Problem then is that without the V5, I can't go to halfords and get any made up without that proof of ownership unless the online DVLA stuff would be permissable as proof to get a new set of plates made?

DVLA will assign the old number and provide a certificate that you can take to get new plates made upThe only other problem we have now is that it says online that the transfer off the vehicle is immediate so have the original vehicle number plates to hand, but my old man has chucked them and we have no idea what the original number plate is unless it tells you on the DVLA site once the transfer is complete.

It'll tell you what the old plate is and also send you the document via email to take to Halfords and have them made up. It's really simple. No need to worry. The only other problem we have now is that it says online that the transfer off the vehicle is immediate so have the original vehicle number plates to hand, but my old man has chucked them and we have no idea what the original number plate is unless it tells you on the DVLA site once the transfer is complete.

Just remember to tell both insurance companies of the change.
Edit: As above, I'm a slow typer!
You can always use a company such as Replacement Number Plates (https://replacement-number-plates.com/) who will make up fully legal number plates for £12 each without having to see any documentation. Cheaper than Halfords and thats including the postage from Jersey. I have no affiliation with them just a very satisfied repeat customer.

Going to see if I can find the original number plate from any old receipts. Halfords want nearly £40 for a set of plates. Much cheaper on eBay if I can order them in advance!milesgiles said:

You won’t beat that jersey price£14.99 for a pair, BS stamped, postcode, etc. I bought those last year and they're ok.
