Help! motorcycle has history check alert wrongly against it
Discussion
Iam currently helping a friend who does not use computers to sell a motorcycle.
Anyone who does a basic online vehicle history check on the bikes reg no. will be sold misleading information
that it has an alert for previously been an insurance write off.
But this certainly not the case
It turns out that it is the bikes vin no. that throws up the alert which is apparently identical to that of a car that WAS
written off many years ago and had the marker put against the vin no. of the car
This is just ridiculous and totally unfair and only goes to create a major headache when trying to sell the bike
Ive got a detailed report from a major vehicle history check website which explains the problem more clearly to any potential buyer but
they say they cant remove the alert from their system.
This is obviously going to put most if not all potential buyers off the bike (ive already had one back out of a deal)
any suggetions what i can do ?

The whole point of VIN numbers is that they should be unique so I can’t think of a situation where a car and bike would have the same number unless we’re talking about a classic vehicle where they are old enough to pre-date the current 17 digit system.
What is the car and bike in question?

I'm aware of the short vin issue that is apparently at play hereWhat is the car and bike in question?
Bike is a 40 year old BMW,car was a Toyota carina
Seems to happen fairly often! https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
Given that the database is linked to the vin rather than registration I can’t see there’s much you can do if there is two vehicles with exactly the same number.
Personally I would clearly evidence the bike is clean and the marker relates to a car and have this presented in a manner to show prospective buyers and put their mind at ease.

smokey mow - ive currently got the bike advertised with an honest and upfront disclosure about the issue that the bike has,but i think almost all prospective buyers will be quickly put off and just move on to the next bike for sale
papa 3 - thanks but ive already got an upgraded hpi check from solera vehicle solutions, also had a phone conversation with one of their agents who wasnt able to offer much help.
The issue only came to light when i tried to advertise the bike on gumtree and you have to input the reg no. when creating the advert, thier system must automatically run an hpi check resulting in the ad being rejected
bertbert - i can only assume the Toyota was manufactured during the time when vin numbers were much shorter than today, and 2 seperate vehicles could by chance have the same vin,
