Morning all.

I have a car that is registered SORN. I took it for an MOT last week (its first in two years), which it passed, then took it home again (all on a trailer).

I now have a car with 12 months' MOT on it, but I want to keep it SORN. The car's been insured since I've owned it, and I want to use it in October.

Just wanted to check - am I okay to leave an untaxed, but insured and MOT'd car in my garage for a few months until I want to use it? I'll probably tax the car for 6 months but then refund the tax within the same initial month and SORN it again.

Common sense says I'm not doing anything wrong but, it's always best to double-check, as stupid as the question may be.

It's a classic Mini if you're wondering. Just taking it for a major service and perhaps a trip to visit my sister.

You can pay VED to use the highway,

If you are not using (or parking on) the highway, you can indeed leave a car on SORN.

You cannot do 'neither of the above' - it either has to be taxed or SORN.

As it's SORN, there's no problem at all with that.

You say it's a 'classic' mini, but presumably you just mean pre 2001. Because if it's 40 years old, you can apply to put the car into the VHI (vehicle of historic interest) category with the V5c at the post office and the VED becomes £0. smile

Thanks all, appreciate the advice.

It's a 2000 Mini, so sadly not quite at the 40 year mark yet!

My TVR is insured and MOT. I tax it on April 1st and SORN it on Sept 30th.

That's all you need to do.

A 2000 MINI is a classic these days? I feel old.
