I'm looking to SORN my car for a while as of 1st Sept and have a silly question...

IF I apply for SORN on-line now it states that the car will be SORN'd as of today - albeit with no refund of this month's tax (which is fine). This being the case can I still drive the car until the 1st or can I legally only drive the remainder of this month if I apply for SORN on 31st (as far as I can see there is no option to apply for future dates)?

???
I think Cylon has missed out the word NOT.
Also I'd sorn it on the last day of August after you finish driving for the day.
If you sort it on 1sept, you may have to pay tax for the month.

I would SORN it some time before 7pm on the 31st August. Also cancel any DVLA DD you may have.

I once SORNed a bike before midnight on the last day of the month, and DVLAs slow computer calculated it from the early hours of the 1st, hence deducting another complete month from the refund cheque!

It wasn't much money, but the principle of this rip-off angered me.
DVLA said tough, until I forwarded their SORN auto-reply email comfirming the SORN was completed the previous day.
Without a covering letter, they then forwarded a further cheque to me for the outstanding amount, fortunately you can pay cheques in via an app, it was hardly worth going into town to the bank for.

Thats odd - The system seems to have a pretty effective 0700-1900 operation, I have used it at 1855 without issue and then checked with another car at 1905 whereby it declined to progress the application (again, this was the last day of the month)

When you SORN it, do ensure that anyone else who uses the car is aware. Preferably before they load it up for a tip run.

I do not re-call issues with declaring SORN online so would not worry too much about declaring it on the last day in August but yes, would not leave it too late in the day to avoid a computer glitch.

Mostly because I reasonably often get 'unable to deal with this right now' from TfL London, when trying to pay the ULEZ. Maybe that is why they give you a 3 day cushion to pay.....

  • Keep the receipt as it will show and prove the time SORN was declared.
Then don't go online to check SORN as it invariably takes a day or two to get updated online (which again to be fair, the DVLA do say it takes...well they say up to 5 working days I think. My car taxed a few days ago took one day)

it would make life a lot easier if DVLA were to be flexible enough to enable people to state from which date they'd like a vehicle SORN'd

The Police National iPad isn't real time either.
I got my SORNed car MOT'd on 30th November a few years ago, and taxed and insured it online the same afternoon, to start from midnight.
I was bumbling along the Lincoln Bypass the following morning and got puled over by an unmarked interceptor.
He came over to my car, expecting me to be one of his usual suspects, and was surprised to find a well spoken bloke in his 60s who knew how to search his emails on his Iphone.
By the time I had proved two out of three he was happy and took himself and his iPad off to find a more likely customer.

Why, can't you plan to do something on a specific day & remember to do so?

Shirley the point is that they want to encourage us to keep the records up to date by making it as easy as possible, especially given that the motoring public contains a broad sepctrum of intelligence levels?
Not including that programmably easy option was a bit of a strange call IMHO.

Some people have busy schedules. I work across multiple time zones, our youngest competes nationally at her chosen sport so has training from 5.30 am onwards, and I'm involved with sport's governing body. That means there are days when I can't add an extra fart into my diary between 4 am on day 1 and 2 am on day 2. Before I left the NHS, I used to work on-calls between 36 and 84 hours long, some of which were ok but others were horrendously busy including operations that took longer than 12 hours. There are lots of people who do 12-14 shift work and/or who aren't allowed their phones with them when working for security reasons. A national system funded by taxes should cater for the variation experienced by those who make up that nation.
