2 years ago I did a 37/30 course so I don’t qualify for another.

In June at Warrington m62 a fking gantry changed from 50 to 40 and I won the cut off lottery and got flashed.

Anyhoo they offered me a
National Motorway Awareness Course Course (that’s what it says)

Who knew? Not me.

Michael Caine does, and Peter Sellers.

Here's he latest list of NDORS courses offered by he UK Road Offender Education outfit.

"UK" is a bit misleading because courses are not offered in Scotland.

UKROEd does not have a monopoly on courses.

Indeed it doesn't.

But I thought it might help answer this:

since UKROED does offer a course going by that name.

Do people get sent on courses for mobile phone use offences? If so, which one is it?

Had a motorway awareness course earlier this year having sped through a temporary speeded sign.
Not the same as a speed awareness and doesnt count as one

But does count as a motorway awareness course - only able to do one of those every 3 years

I don't think so. I think courses were discontinued when the penalty went up from three to six points.

Well I for one wasn’t aware of that. So it seems that a speed awareness course is different from a motorway awareness course which again is different from an awareness course awarded for a red light infraction.

I suppose it gives you another bite of the cherry.

Courses seemed to stop being a general thing when the legislation was adjusted a few years ago, although a few months ago someone on here maintained they had been offered one recently

Any chance you might tell us what's right then? I know it might appear a bit of an imposition, but you never know - It might, you now, help BertBert, who asked the question, and any others who may be interested.

It’s a bit odd and I know you cannot answer for them all, but at least two of your fellow Learned Friends seem to suggest that courses are no longer available (yes, Google is wonderful).

First of all, Kang & Co (they’ve got offices in High Holborn in London, so they must be good smile ):

https://kangandco.co.uk/2023/10/26/using-a-mobile-...

“It is important for motorists to be aware that driver awareness courses for use of a mobile phone do not exist as they do for those caught speeding for the first time. This is a strict liability offence and attracts a harsh penalty for contravening the law.”

Then MAJ Law, nearer your neck of the woods:

https://www.majlaw.co.uk/tools/news/general-law/is...

“Courses for mobile phone offences were scrapped in 2017.”

Thames Valley Police suggest they have been scrapped in all but exceptional circumstances:

https://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/police-forces/t...

“From 8 March 2017, there will be a change in policy across both Thames Valley and Hampshire so that the NDORS (National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme) awareness course will no longer be routinely offered as an alternative to a fixed penalty notice. Officers will use their discretion as to whether, in exceptional circumstances, a course is appropriate.”

It is interesting to note that both MAJ Law and TVP suggest the changes occurred co-incidentally with the increase in the penalty for the offence as I thought (only thought, mind, not stated as gospel).

I have a suspicion you are about to embark on another unjustified and unnecessary crusade to trash my “credibility”. So perhaps we can nip that in the bud. I appeared to make no claim to be legally qualified, quoted no legislation, offered no “quasi-legal” advice (which apparently caused your earlier palpitations). I just said what I thought was correct. So what’s it all about this time?

There does seem to be some confusion and, judging by the latest post, that seems not to be confined to me. So what is the right answer? I don’t need to know because I wouldn’t dream of using a mobile phone when driving. But I thought the idea of forums like this was to help people and spread knowledge. Simply stating ”Wrong” doesn’t seem to help those aims very much.
