I was recently snapped by 2 cameras in Deeside,North Wales.
The NIP is issued by North Wales Police and it clearly states it was an air quality camera.

When did the Police force become enforcers of environmental policy.

Surely this is overreaching their remit.

I think we need a bit more information. What were you driving? What was the signage etc.

Was it one of those areas where they tell you that Speed has been reduced to improve air quality? if so then the reason is irrelevant, you were still speeding.

Surely they are just enforcing a speed limit though? Irrespective of why the cameras and limits were introduced.

So I don’t think it’s overreach as such, if annoying.

I’m not denying I was speeding but question the whole moral element.

If I was driving an electric car the whole reason of the offence is debunked.

It just seems like another cash grab veiled as a public safety thing.

It’s a Welsh government thing, like 20’s on main roads.

I have to drive through the Wrexham one regularly- I’ve never seen anyone over 50.

Did you get caught by the downhill part in Deeside?

I got collared both directions.

It’s a bloody dual carriageway that runs from the M56 to Holyhead for those that don’t know.

There's been an environmental element to speed limits for some time, and a safety one for longer. So it's always been a moral question, but in any case it's just a speed limit like anywhere else.

That section is also pretty clearly signposted as a 50mph average speed camera zone, set up because it goes through a built up area and people driving diesels fast when it was nsl created lots of air pollution there. Nothing to do with the Welsh government and 20mph zones. There's a few similar zones I know about in Stockport and near Sheffield and probably more I don't. Once most of the diesels are gone and the air improves they'll be reviewed, iirc the Stockport one already is being.

Did you not wonder why everyone else was doing 50?

I got nicked many years ago where the A55 goes through Colwyn Bay and drops to 50. Got caught by an unmarked car - I did see him and slowed down but he said he’d clocked me at 70 but I could choose to accept a fixed penalty or go to Court.

I vowed never to visit Wales again but it’s a bit unavoidable as I live near the border.

Its the average speed cameras they setup to force people to drive at 50 mph. They put these up using the excuse of environmental issues. Apparently 50 mph causes less pollution. As far as i know this has not yet been proven. There is one of these 50 mph stretches on the A483 at Wrecsam (Wrexham)

This is why they call then air quality cameras.

At least average cameras make more sense than one off in that they reduce the speed of traffic rather than the brake and go around others.

The police enforce laws, that IS their remit. The legislators and local authorities put the speed on that section as signed. The reason is irrelevant.

That 50 limit is because there are many roads that join the A55 from built up areas. Being older roads, these slip roads have poor visibility and are short, that’s why they are 50. I have frequently seen cars stopped by unmarked cars.

Which also goes through some built up areas and has several sections where the speed limit is not 70MPH. Your point is?

Keeping it in 2nd gear would really show them

As soon as you turn off the 50 limit you will be in second anyhow as its going to be a 20 limit smile
