Police can lawfully detain people to prevent a breach of the peace. I've seen lots of videos of bottles being thrown and violent piss heads kicking off this evening in London so it's hardly a shock that the police are getting a grip of it.

I'm pretty sure most people will be fairly supportive following the scenes in Southport last night.

It also kicked off in Southend last night, with s chasing each other around with machetes. The police were caught off guard despite knowing about it beforehand from social media.

I don't see it as a political issue as much as a gross stupidity issue. To read a post on social media and as a result start throwing bricks and burning cars is simply vandalism and mindless violence, tribal youth looking for something to fight. 40+ years ago they'd have been called 'football supporters'.

I think when you see a despicable crime take place which is then subjected to misinformation, amplified by multiple right wing commentators, leading to a tanked up mob rioting outside a competely unconnected to anything mosque, you can be reasonably assured it's a political problem.

What we saw in Whitehall last night was just another manifestation of the same stupid people. The cops kettling it for control is fine by me.

I saw firsthand as an immigrant to this country how immigrant communities don’t like ethically English working class people, I lived and worked with Hindu, Muslim and Jewish and can say whilst Hindu’s were dismissive and Jews were just obsessed with cooking sabbath meals, Muslims from my first encounter were not able to live and let live.
I had only been here a month or so and Indira Gandhi was assassinated and the factory I worked in had both Hindu and Muslim workers and the funeral was on a Saturday and it was arranged that a big TV be put in the canteen so the mainly Hindu women could watch. The Muslim men went in and blocked the TV and stopped the women watching all the while making the most disgusting and crude comments about the late Mrs Gandhi, I was a youngster and too frightened to challenge them but it made me realise how dangerous group think is.
