I was in Australia last week and I got pulled over in a 110 limit motorway doing 135 (this was north of Sydney, heading towards Newcastle)

Got pulled over at 135 and the police officer literally acted like I murdered a bunch of school kids

Fine was $500 aud

If I was clocked ay 140 or more, it would have been $1000 aud

Crazy, but it is what it is

So don't speed in Australia at all, they're really anal about it

We got done around 2000 I think in the middle of nowhere between Townsville and Cairns, 120 in a 100 I think it was. They U-turned chased us down the road sirens and lights blaring, rudest pair of cops I've ever come across and like you say it was like we had committed some sort of murder, made us empty the car and searched everything (no idea what they thought a pair of pensioners were carrying) and they took great delight being derogative about Brits. I think that it was $75 fine that we paid when we got back to Brisbane. By far the worst people we med on that month long trip.

Didn't Hamilton get reamed one year doing a burnout out for a bunch of F1 fans.

The Aussies seem to take themselves rather seriously for the nation that likes to think it doesn't.

Google tells me the number one cause of deaths in Oz is speeding and that figure is increasing YOY.

The M1 is bad apperently as well for accidents.

So maybe that cop has seen quite a few crushed and separated corpses in his time and to the outsider who has never seen one, yes he may seem full on?

I’ve been caught speeding in Australia on a few occasions, been heavily fined and had some interesting chats with the police.

They are massively focused on speeding and they are hugely confused as to why that doesn’t seem to be having the expected result.

In my area of Victoria, get caught doing 20kmh (12mph) over the limit and you will make the front page of the local newspaper. There are speed checks EVERYWHERE and the accident rate keeps increasing.

As Clive James once said

“The problem with Australians is not that so many of them are descended from convicts, but that so many of them are descended from prison officers.”

Have you watched any of the Australian dash cam channel stuff on YT… the standard of driving isn’t much better than the Russians and Chinese.

Been like this for decades, and it's well known. The slightest bit of rule breaking brings the full force of the law.
Still, Oz historically has very high male suicide rates, terrible sexism, awful institutionalised racism, and a lot of very lazy people who put our spongers to shame. Beautiful landscapes etc, and I've some great friends there, but it's definitely not Britain But Hotter.

My experience is that Aussies generally stick to the speed limits, in the country as well as towns and cities. I’ve seen them take ages to complete an overtake on dual carriageway roads.
Thought the standard of driving much the same as the UK and significantly better than China…lived there too.

You've presumably not seen the regular TV series about the police in Australia. They've been tough and determined on speeders for many years now. Surprising that people still don't know about it.

Funny as I always thought that they would be more free living so to speak.

Had no problems driving there in the 90s in a rented V8 Falcon. Fuel was dirt cheap, as was eating out and booze.

What on Earth happened?

They were crazy Draconian during Covid too.

That could explain why the cops are angry, how dare accident rates keep increasing just because they focus on the wrong thing?!

"In my area of Victoria"

If you don't mind me asking, which part is this?

Admittedly i've never been to Vic, only NSW, but i'd like to visit Vic one day too

But if what you're saying is true, I can just imagine how nerve racking it would be to be cruising along at the speed limit, miss a speed change and then get booked for 20km over and thus make the news

Bit scary tbh lol

My experience is that they love rules, show no slack and enforce strongly. The opposite of popular perception.

"What on Earth happened?"

I'm probably biased because I got a ticket in Australia obviously, but they probably discovered a major way to make money

Make beautiful wide motorways (that are much better quality than British motorways), set a stupidly low speed limit, then fine the crap out of anyone who dares to go over it and drive at a more reasonable pace, whilst lecturing them on how they've literally murdered a bunch of school kids

As well as seemingly being converse in UK law, you are now also an expert on another countries rules?

Cool.

Less than 2mph slower than the U.K. limit? And some are 130 km/h. Hardly stupidly low.

You know as well as I do that anything under 90mph on a British motorway and you'd have to be very unlikely to get booked by a cop

Interesting you mention there are 130 roads in Australia though, I didn't see any (although I was admittedly only in NSW)

Rubbish.

You do 90 past a traffic cop car and see what happens.

They may show a little discretion up to 80 but if you have a copper in a bad mood then even that may be worth a tug. 90 is piss take territory.

Besides, I’ve never been to Aus and even I know they’re very strict when it comes to speed limits.
