There's a dual carriageway that runs between Colchester and Elmstead. About two miles of it is straight with excellent visibility. Until a few weeks ago it enjoyed the national speed limit, ie 70mph. Then some roadworks appeared, complete with a temp 40 limit - and guess what? - a permanent 40 limit installed behind it for the entire two miles. Each side road was properly labelled with 'end of limit' signs and it all looked totally permanent.

I had been brewing on writing a letter to various bodies for a while. Imagine my surprise when I travelled the road today and saw NO signs. For a moment I thought I'd been through a timewarp. But no - all trace of the offending 40 limit had ben removed, as if it had never been there.

I wonder why? Perhaps Essex CC has not filled in all the paperwork - but then, you'd think they'd just put bags over the signs until the approval was received. Or maybe the usual police 'OK' was not given...?

Has anyone else ever seen this phenomenon and are there any other explanations?

Maybe a public-spirited citizen went out in the night with an angle grinder?

Maltravers restaurant in Elmstead Market. Absolute tops!

BTW late at night, coming off the greenstead roundabout, numpties straight into the outside lane at 40mph (when limit not there) just because they want to turn right to wivenhoe in about 2 miles time! I want to overtake. not fair.

Just in case they notice that they could have left the 40 limits there.......Not that anyone paid them the slightest bit of notice
