After a recent amazon firestick software update pin protection on purchases removed itself from all my firesticks that received the update. We always put pin protection on and we have 9 firesticks.
We never pay for anything on prime as everything we watch is on netflix or itv player etc so it wasnt obvious pin protection was removed.
The remote fell down the couch and in trying to retrieve it dune started playing on the tv. It was on for around 10 seconds until we stopped it.
The next day i noticed a 14 quid charge for dune and contacted customer service. At first they refused to refund but after a bit of arguing and asking to be escalated they eventually gave a refund as a one off goodwill gesture. They acknowledged that some people experienced losing pin protection on purchases without any user intervention but they said even with that if it happens again i wont be refunded.
I like the fire stick os but seriously considering ditching them now. How can this be legal? Their defective automatic software update broken my pin protection, it was nothing i had done.
I asked to disable all paid content. One rep said that was impossible, another said they have done it. I am finding it hard to trust these idiots.
Any tips on what to do next?

Stop using it?

You don’t sound happy with the service, so are not compelled to use it. Lots of alternatives out there.

Apparently PIN protection got broken by a recent Amazon firmware update so you can end up inadvertently watching paid for content.

OP never watches paid for content intentionally.

They were charged £14 for 10 secs of Dune but following heroic battle with Amazon customer service, they got a refund but got told - never darken our door.

OP is pissed off at the failure of Amazon to protect them from this.

Yet more evidence of the broken modern world we live in. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be any way of blaming Brexit or the world's response to COVID on this understandably frustrating situation.

That last paragraph is my view and aren't points raised by the OP.

The world has always been broken. There have always been scams, rip offs, mistakes, oversights.

You just have to be careful that you don’t cut your nose off in retaliation.

You were the one that dropped the remote down the back of the sofa and inadvertently decided to watch a paid for movie.

Shouldnt have been possible. I had a pin setup to prevent that from happening. Can you not read?

Cancel prime and stop giving Amazon your money, that's what I did after they introduced the "pay us to stop adverts on your paid service" charge. FRO.

Presumably your paid service wasn't a high enough amount to cover all costs, so Amazon presumably needed to make up this shortfall with adverts or with you paying a bit more, seems reasonable to me but if you don't like it then obviously you can FRO.

My mrs is a technophobe , and we have 9 different tvs. Having the firesticks means she has 1 ui to learn and 1 ui for me to support over the phone.
When we had sky, an hdmi matrix and harmony remotes problems were frequent and a pain to support while i am on a job site trying to work through other techy problems. The current solution just works. At least until this bullst.
I wouldn't cancel prime as the next day shipping to any jobsite through 1 app saves me a ton of time money and hassle at work.

Scam - a dishonest scheme.

Why do people use the term scam for everything that annoys them now? Accidentally purchased a Prime move = not a scam. Not understanding how BMW Eco-Pro Mode works = not a scam. Seems that every time someone gets annoyed and wants to blame someone else, they call it a scam. I do find it a rather unfortunate number of events for a remote lost down a sofa, to then go into Amazon Prime, click Dune, click purchase, click I am sure I want to purchase...

Seriously considering this! Maybe just me but when I watch a few episodes continually, the ads seem to get more frequent. Really taking the piss when they already earn mega millions! Pure, Unadulterated, Greed! Customers are no longer valued by large corporations, only their money! Maybe when Amazon lose a few million customers they'll think again, but I doubt it! They've got too big, and arrogant, to care about their customers any more! Prove me wrong Amazon!

I understand!

Our new Samsung telly came with two remotes, with different layouts, that has caused a lot of comment.

Im quite sure i had a email or maybe notification through with some thing to do with Amazon prime tv,

Prime tv has free and subscription channels in the app one of these was going to stop becoming free and was going to charge and become subscription based automatically unless you unsubscribe to this channel, i thought that was a bit naughty of them as i reckoned it would catch quite a few out on the first month until people saw their bill and questioned it then unsubscribe

i like the fire stick for its ease of user friendly interface but got to keep an eye on these subscription services

I actually quite like that Samsung do that now. One remote has all the functions you barely use so goes in a draw for setup or one off requirements. The other remote is one third the size and only does volume and source select, as that all most people ever use.

Or have you got something different?

Probably worth noting if the OP had say on his Samsung remote it wouldn’t have been able to order his film as it only has a couple of buttons.
