I always my insurance on auto renew with the insurer but the insurer doesn't like electric cars any more and so informed they would not be renewing at any price, which obviously mitigates the auto renew.

Unfortunately they put this in a secure message portal and didn't tell me. I only found out when I logged in online and it turned out I'd been driving for 3 days without insurance.

I obviously immediately purchased car insurance when I worked it out.

Question: how likely will I be to get an IN10 conviction/points? I didn't go on any motorways or large A roads or into any cities, and maybe I saw a police car but they didn't pull me over.

If I go to caught is the above a mitigating factor?

How long is it before I can stop worrying about the letter in the post?

Don’t worry about it. I did the same several years back and the first point I twigged was several months after it expired when my wife reversed into the neighbours’ car.

Jeez that's not ideal. Same happened to a mate with his home insurance, but he only found out when his house flooded...

So there aren't actually that many ANPR cameras mounted on roads is what you are saying?

Luckily, you weren't caught, so won't have to go to court. If you did have to go to court, having been caught, then to be curt, it wouldn't be a mitigating factor in any way. You would have been found guilty of driving without insurance, because you were guilty of driving without insurance.

Right it doesn't work same way as speeding? I.e. I would have had to be caught in person, the cameras don't link to the database and send out automatic IN10 notices?

How can they? The camera's don't know who is driving, it could have been someone using DOC (notwithstanding the need for some insurers to require the car to be covered in the 1st place).

Don't worry, make sure you're insured, and check your docs carefully in future.

Right ok. Jesus thank god I noticed. Does explain why there are so many uninsured drivers on the roads if it takes manual intervention by a police car to get caught.

You can get a letter in the post as a warning from some forces. Sort of a first offence type of thing if caught on anpr.

You can be cuaght by the database, without being seen driving, as the car must be insured if it's not SORN.
I've known people get warning letters this way, they didn't renew the car insurance while out of the country for example.

Yes, but that won't lead to a no insurance conviction. The car can be off the road, and not being driven, so no insurance isn't an issue. The offence is not having sorned it.

1000s around the country. But you'll need someone nearby at the time to act upon it.

There are loads. But they're not typically used to enforce minor motoring offences. They're monitoring drug dealers, organised crime, terrorist suspects etc.

My wife managed to drive without insurance for eight months before she finally got one of those "your vehicle is uninsured - do something about it or else" letters from the DVLA. Unless you were actually stopped while driving the likelihood that you will ever hear anything about this again is negligible. Just get the car insured pronto and breath a sigh of relief that nothing bad happened.

I actually can't get the Ask Mid website to work for me? Won't give me a result, just does nothing, very odd.

For the OP, don't worry about it, as said above.

Wouldn't worry too much. I got a letter from A&S police telling me that my Jazz was uninsured and I might want to think about insuring it. That was in January of this year. The Insurance ran out the previous Sept !

Seems existing Ins sent me an email telling me that they wouldn't be auto-renewing which I obvs missed. Once I got the letter I immediately insured the Jazz and thanked my lucky stars that I hadn't been stopped by a traffic ANPR police car.

You want to thank your lucky stars you weren’t involved a serious accident ffs.
I’m staggered that anyone can not realise that they are uninsured
Missed the email? I bet if your insurance company auto renewed and the price was trebled you’d soon have noticed…
it would have served you right if your car had been stolen whilst uninsured

No you're not. You're 100% to blame. Having a car isn't a right, it's a privilege, and it's completely down to you to make sure your car is insured. It's not the insurers job to tell you when it's due, and the fact that they usually do is very nice of them.

We have 3 dates per car to remember, insurance, tax & MOT. In 42 years of motoring, I've never missed any of them. Does your phone not have a calendar?

Sorry, but it's all on you. As for others saying cars were driving uninsured for months on end, just appalling.

Ridiculous internet troll get a life you pathetic prick. Presume your mum reminds you to renew your insurance every year cos you live in her basement at the age of 46?

Policy was on auto renew but directline line decided not to rebew due to underwriting too much similar risk. All fine but they didn’t email to say this, they sent a message to a secure inbox (and didn’t send email saying that there was a new message).

Obviously I am mostly to blame, as I had an idea my insurance was due in June but didn’t know what day - hence I checked and found my mistake.
Are you referring to me? I wasn’t replying to you but the the other fking fool that doesn’t know when their insurance runs out, but yeah you’re stupid too.
My mums been dead for quite a few years so no she doesn’t remind me when my insurance is due-
Obviously your mum should have reminded you then you wouldn’t be on here worrying about it.
Do you rely on someone else to tell you when your mot runs out too?

“Obviously I am mostly to blame”!! Mostly? laugh
Take some responsibility for your life ffs.

Reply deleted since you are right you didn’t reply to me so probably was OTT. Sorry. but I still think direct line were pretty wk using their stupid secure message thing with no email prompt for something so important.

And to the other guy re MOT obviously I do have that in the calendar as I know there is no reminder. Every previous year direct line have sent me both an email and a paper letter telling me it’s renewal time so I was lulled into a false sense of security. Won’t be happening again obvs but still
