Why not? Would avoid all the s172 identify the driver bks…

Could do yellow box junctions and bus lane fines as well. Super efficient revenue collection!

What a way to rape the population

Set limits to arbitrary/stupidly low levels and then increase enforcement a few months later.

Cynical is an understatement.

To set a target for fines is disgraceful. And yet the great British public walk into it every time.

I won't be going to the Forbidden City.

And it must all be completely true as well because it's in the Mail.

No, it's a PHer exaggerating a story in the DM that cites GB News which itself states they're talking about a TfL report on the capacity to issue 1 million fines (but doesn't give a source). TfL is under the jurisdiction of the mayor. So the DM headline that "Sadiq Khan vows to issue 1m speeding fines" is pure fiction as is the OPs idea of cc autopay for speeding fines.

It's basically multiple of layers of outrage porn.

I've spent a bit of time googling trying to find a source, there are lots of freedom of information questions, some articles from January 2022, 2 and a half years ago when this same story was floated before but I'm struggling to find a solid source that states where the 1m number comes from and what it means.

OK for the record this seems to be the source - https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/safety-and-security/r...

TfL said:
The Met is currently on target to be able to take action on a million speeding offences by 2024.

Furthermore it seems the Met issue the fines and the funds go to the central government treasury rather than TfL.

FOI request said:
The enforcement of speed restrictions in London is carried out in London by the Metropolitan Police. No revenue is generated for TfL or London as it goes to central government. We do not raise revenue from speeding tickets. All fines from fixed penalties or associated court hearings are paid to the Treasury.

How can you plan to issue a million speeding tickets. I've never heard anything so blatant as an 'invisible' tax on the motorist.

It would be nice if no one broke the limit and didn't get caught. That would certainly scupper his budgeting.

I’m all for them just admitting it’s revenue earning & have a simple system:

Within the same thresholds as a FPN & 3 points allow you to take 3 points & a £100 fine or 2 points & a £200 fine, 1 point & a £400 fine & 0 points & a £600 fine.

I’d be happy to pay more to keep my license clean seeing as the last couple I have had were <85mph on motorways.

That is just a licence for the rich to speed with impunity if you don't get points and eventual disqualification.
At least with points rich and poor can get disqualified on totting up.

Yes it is.
Just like environmental taxes are a licence for the rich to pollute with impunity.

You are right, which is why it's such an appealing notion. In many other countries speeding fines are just seen a go faster tax and budgeted for accordingly.

The French raked in 2 Billion Euros in motoring fines last year as well as doing away with points for minor speeding offences, it's just a fine, but I'm sure it will encourage some to speed a little bit more.
They are still setting fire to speed cameras here too.

Its a nice taste of a labour gov, what Khan has done in London, its sad that lots of people don't even feel like voting.

Starma seems to have zero control over the party and their war on the motorist is going to be savage.

I was talking to someone in Bristol the other day and they were getting a 79k EV just to avoid CAZ, when I said my 4 year old petrol is complaint she was shocked! People are so brain washed!

Thanks for the research smile
The funding quote, though, may be a bit of a deception.
AIUI, the Met get paid by the private company for every citizen they send on a SAC,
and, while the fine income does go to central government,
central government then gives some of that money to TfL and London.

So some of the SAC money does go to the Met Police,
and some of the fine money does go to TfL and London.
