I know this is likely to open the floodgates but ...

I have several vehicles all with good no claims insurance history.
If I add a named driver to one of them and they have a crash, I know this will affect that vehicle and the No Claims,
as there will be a claim on that policy, but could this affect the other vehicles at the "any claims, accidents" etc. stage
on the other vehicles or is it a case of "not me boss - someone else".

Its a two part answer

1. The NCD will only be impacted on the policy that covers the car involved if its a fault claim.

2. Both you and the named driver will need to answer YES to the 'any accidents, claims or losses in the last x years?' Questio on every other motor policy.

Exactly as above.

Be careful adding named drivers to your policy. I've been stung in recent years on a work policy whereby 1 of the named drivers had a fault accident causing my personal car and bike insurance to increase significantly. It also affected my wifes car insurance as I am a named driver on there. Named drivers can be very costly, effectivly whenever they are driving your vehicle they are risking your premiums increasing in the future of which you have no control of.

Thanks both.

I was thinking of adding the girlfriend to one of the cars so she could do some occasional driving/use, but given the possible
downsides it looks as if it would be better (less risk on other cars insurances) if she took out her own policy.

Why not put the car that you're happy for her to drive in her name on the insurance with you as a named driver? Then she can also build up some NCB. Even if you're the main driver, you can declare that. It may even give her driving other cars cover too!

It's very common for partners/spouses to be named drivers on each others vehicles. I, along with my in laws, are drivers on my wifes policy and on my vans policy. My wife is a driver on my tuition policy, as well as my classic policy.

If a claim were to occur, there can be no dispute over which policy to use.

There is nothing wrong with having two policies on one vehicle, but you cannot claim on both and most I've seen have a clause saying they will split the costs with any other insurer covering the same liability which could get messy.
