….in towns and villages. You know, where they give a real time readout of your speed and a green smiling face if you are within the limit.

Does anyone know what happens if you go above the limit? Is it as simple as a frowning face? Or do they start swearing and calling you names? biggrin

One I pass daily goes ballistic and flashes wildly for a few seconds. Commuters like to bunch up and run at it, then we get a nice lights display for those dark winter mornings, helping you see the road ahead, too.

A dwarf jumps out of the top and throws bricks at you!

biggrin

More seriously, they record the speed of passing traffic and also highlight the fastest speed past the thing. One in our village tells the community bobby that 85% of us are on or under the 30mph limit. Fastest speed past it is clamed at 75mph.

It varies on the device.

Some of them flash your speed in red along with a SLOW DOWN message.

Others just go straight to the SLOW DOWN message in red and don't show you your high score. Spoilsports.

Some of the units around here can also have their green THANK YOU message reconfigured into seasonal graphics. So we get christmas trees and easter bunnies here at different times of the year.

The worst times are when they accidentally get flicked into KM/hr display so everyone panics and gets confused when it shows them doing 42 (green) in a 30mph zone....

Speed data tends to get collected by the local parish councils and handed over to community policing, with the occasional trigger to send a real camera van to the location if there are enough vehicles recorded over the limit during a certain period.

Do you think they realise that some of us enjoy seeing what’s the biggest number we can get the display to show?

There are several on roads I travel regularly, but they will be recording false information.

The signs are in a 40 zone after a change from a 50... but are reading the speeds of the cars when they are still well into the 50 zone before the normal light braking zone for the speed limit change.

I have noticed many of the signs are more accurate now, displaying the accurate gps speed rather than being way over in the past.

The ones local to us show a green number if you're 29mph or under. On 30 this comes up amber. 31-prob 35 it flashes angry red, and above this it just flashes slow down.

They had stuck one on the back of a council van in a 30 limit recently - that flashed a red angry face alternating with your speed.

Not sure what speed they thought people should be doing, but as it was clear I got down to 7mph displayed and was still getting the angry face.

I always thought that is what they were there for.

Although I did wonder why all the signs seemed to be mounted upside down, surely a smiley face should be displayed if you manage to beat the high score.

I did wonder that and then realised that the "speed kills" lot will have all the evidence they need to get speed humps and 20 limits in your home roads.

Unless it was an emergency vehicle. I did much more in 30's when I was in the job.

One near me is set off if you run past. I usually get 8 or 9, best was 17 when sprinting past. This surprised me as I thought I wouldn't be a big enough target.
