I bought a car (shed) with a previous keeper's V5C
Discussion
Looking for advice on the following:
I was stuck in London yesterday and decided to buy this to get home in (and use as a run around thereafter.)
I bought it for shed money on a backstreet from Chabuddy G. Despite everything I've ever read about PT Cruisers, it's actually sort of fun to drive. The gear linkage kept detaching (cabin side) on the way home. I live in Manchester. No regrets. Really made me appreciate why having no hard shoulder on large sections of motorway is bloody stupid though.
The log book was (apparently) still in the last owner's name and Chabuddy gave me the entire thing to fill in and send off. He wasn't bothered.
I tried to tax it online at the roadside but the site wouldn't accept the reference number which (I assumed) was because it's an older style 11 digit number, instead of 12, so I shrugged and drove it home.
It turns out the log book is not the latest one. It's from 2009 and and the latest issued log book is from 2012.
Which of these is best?
- Fill in the new keeper section of the V5C I have and just send it off anyway. (Or will they reject is because it's not the latest one?)
- Throw it away and use a V62 form to apply for a new log book and pay the £25.
I'm going to attempt to tax it at the post office tomorrow, again using the old V5C. Will be interesting to see if that works or not.
Thanks.

Does it have a valid MOT?I was stuck in London yesterday and decided to buy this to get home in (and use as a run around thereafter.)

Try taxing it at the PO either with the NKS you have or failing that a V62 (though I’m guessing the car hasn’t been passed to trade as it should have which may prevent this)
If you can at least get it taxed you can then have a crack at applying for the V5 for free with the old NKS, worth a try if you’re not in a rush to get the V5 .

I know nothing about him, but a few people on here have used https://www.roadtaxmartin.com/ to get cars taxed when they don't have the V5C.

That looks brilliant. Thank you for this. I had no idea this was a thing. In the (probably quite likely) event I can't get road tax, not having to wait six weeks for a new log book is excellent. To answer some other points raised:
Yes, it has an MOT. Almost a year!
Yes, it is hideous. Gloriously so. Always hated them and dismissed them out of hand before now.
It's not a V6, (but I don't think there actually was a V6). 2001 so VED is a piffling £400 or so, instead of £600+.

How does this work then? The site is suspiciously light on details. How much is it and isn't there a requirement for valid insurance proof before Swansea will let you tax it ?I remembered him as he was mentioned in another thread recently - someone needed to tax a car so they could use the AA to fix it! - there's a thread here with some comments: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
