I'm buying a used car, it has just been taken off its personalised plate that has been on since first registration.

The seller has advised me of the appropriate "year" applicable registration issued by DVLA. I need it to be live on the DVLA database before I can set up insurance.

Can anybody advise how long it takes to being live on DVLA database?

Cheers

If done online it's instant.

That's what I thought, but this one isn't, at least when I go onto DVLA "Check Car details" the new registration isn't recognised.

I guess I could do a quick comparison site and see if it's picked up that way.

Just tried a comparison site and not recognised, so I'm still no wiser.

Ah. Maybe it's instant to the user, but needs an overnight database update?

If the private number was put on the car from first registration and the car has never had an age related plate issued I'm sure it will have to be a postal application which takes about week and they will issue a new age related plate as part of the normal transfer which is £80.

It wasn't for me Craig.

I had my private plate on from new & did it online, was issued with a date related plate immediately.

Yes the notification was instantaneous, this was completed yesterday, I too thought an overnight DB update and live today, but not so! I think I'd better contact the seller just to make sure he hasn't sent me the incorrect details.

It's a while since i last did it but I've had to send the application to DVLA..? In fact the last two New cars I've had I've had them registered first for that reason,so good to know if it can be done on line now.

If you having trouble getting the Insurer to play ball ask the seller to give you the certificate issued for the original plate and give that to the Insurer maybe ?

The car was registered from new (as far as I know....thinking about it scratchchin) with my plate. When I sold the car I went online to retain and was issued FN56 OBU.

I had to change my cars registration number recently, the DVLA website required the 11 digit code from the V5, my original registration number and the £80 fee, as soon as I paid a new registration number certificate immediately popped up on the screen, and a new V% came by post a few days later.

I'm not sure exactly when the new reg number appears visible on DVLA website for others to view.

The car will have been issued with a normal numberplate when first put on the road, which sits there until a private plate is transferred off.

If another private plate is put on and taken off, the original number is then reactivated.

If that's the case why isn't the original (never used) VRN instantaneously available on the DVLA database?

When I've taken plate off a car the previous number was searchable and taxable from that point.

I had a 2014 BMW 1200 GS registered from new with a private plate, in 2022, I bought a replacement 1250 GS, which was waiting for me in the showroom with that same private number attached. The dealer swapped the number on line, I paid the fee via DVLA website & I rode away. I got home about an hour later & out of curiosity looked up the replacement number that my old bike had been given & the MOT history was all there and my private number related to my new 1250 GS. I had no trouble in arranging insurance in advance of the swap over, just needed to tell them the approximate collection time.

Erm, now that is how I thought it should happen, I fear something is not right with the process that I'm waiting upon.

Maybe the problem is the seller? Are they genuine do you think?
