Caught twice on single day...
Discussion
Work colleague came to me today (being the 'car guy' and supposed to know about these things), his daughter just received two letters from Police Scotland for two separate offences within a couple of hours on the same day (same journey). One was about 51mph in a temporary 40 limit and the other 63mph in a 50 limit.
Normally separated I'd say just send either back and take the likely offer of 3 points and £100 fine, and that was my advice (basically swallowing the 6 points and increased insurance for the next few years), however starting to wonder if these won't be dealt with as separate incidents, and will she be hauled into court and some higher jeopardy applied? Are the police systems joined up enough to detect these 2 happened on same day?

Will be 2 separate offences, FP £100 and 3 points each, the fact it happened on the same day attracts no ectra punisment...........Even in Scotland! The good result would be to have them treated as one continous offence, but as Bert correctly says that's not going to happen unless it's on the same continous journey on the same road in the same limitNormally separated I'd say just send either back and take the likely offer of 3 points and £100 fine, and that was my advice (basically swallowing the 6 points and increased insurance for the next few years), however starting to wonder if these won't be dealt with as separate incidents, and will she be hauled into court and some higher jeopardy applied? Search on "going unsigned" which apparently still works for NIPs in Scotland.
They are not the type to try play the system, so not going to even suggest it. As suspected, 6 points, £200 in fines and a few years of painful insurance given the girl in question is 20, but the path of least resistance is to pay up - that's what I suggested. Thanks all for the confirmation.

If the driver is 20, has she had her license long enough to still be able to drive once 6 points are added to it?As suspected, 6 points, £200 in fines and a few years of painful insurance given the girl in question is 20, but the path of least resistance is to pay up - that's what I suggested. I got caught speeding in around 1992. On a fairly low income (£10k) 50 in a 30. £100 fine and 3 points. It was in court not a fixed penalty. I plead guilty by letter.
Same road, similar time a local MEP was caught in the morning on his way to Ayr and again in the afternoon on the way home. Same court sitting as me. He got this classed as 1 YES1 speeding offence and the fine was something like £30 and 3 points.
Not that I'm bitter or anything!!

My partner managed to get caught twice by two separate speed cameras 45 minutes a couple of years back.
The first was for doing 47 in the 40mph zone at the bottom of the m32 to Bristol and then doing 66 in the variable speed limit on the m5.
She took a course for the first offence and 3 points for the second. An expensive trip!

One set for the wife, one set for the daughter surely?
Silliest post of the day winner A Labour MP and her brother were jailed for similar.
My ex wife got prosecuted twice in one day about 20 years ago. On the way home she decided to overtake a marked police car at 80+ MPH on the M25 and got 3 points.
Then a couple of days later she got another NIP through the door. Thinking it was a mistake and a repeat of the first prosecution she phoned Surrey police only to be told this was a different NIP from Kent police for a speed camera she set off on the way there.
6 points in total and two separate fines.

I'd always thought that you could only be prosecuted once for a speeding offence if it was a 'single journey' ie you hadn't stopped between the two offences? But if you had stopped, even briefly for petrol, then both applied.
Maybe it's changed, or you have to take the court option to do this?

Being treated as one offence will only happen if it was continous ie on the same road and with no limit changes,Maybe it's changed, or you have to take the court option to do this?
