Uninsured car on drive for 5 days
Discussion
Hello All
So after delaying my next insurance by a few days to get the price down because I have use of another car, I just realised that is not allowed !
Should I declare sorn for those 5 days and then restart vehicle tax? - how much would I lose doing that?
The drive isn't visisble from the public street so nobody is going to check its number plate but it must be very easy for DVLA to cross reference the insurance database with the tax one to see I would have 5 days on drive not insured.
So another question is, has anyone ever been fined "historically" for this? What a royal PITA.

I do all I can not to worry, if that costs me a bit of cash, it's worth it.
Only you know how much it would upset you if anything happened.
I'd do it right if it were me, others will say other things, pick the one you're happy with.
(can you not just get a short term policy for 5 days, can't be much, especially if you're just keeping it at home)??

If you SORN now you will only lose the next few days tax paid, and will get the benefit of all of May if you renew 1st May.
I imagine you’ll be ok on Continuous Insurance rule given it’s been a very short period off cover, it’s not been spotted on road by Police/ANPR and you’ve not had a nudge letter.

You will be fine. Or rather, not fined.
Seriously, I've done it inadvertently, as have others on here, all with no consequences.
I believe the accepted wisdom is that you get letters after a few months and action only after multiple warnings.
All assuming that the vehicle isn't on the public highway of course.

If it's being stored off road and not being driven it would not worry me.
I forgot to tax one of my cars last year when DVLA weren't sending out reminders.
Oh st moment when the warning letter arrived, immediatly went on line and renewed and have heard nothing further !
Thankfully their systems seem a little slow at times

Having a car untaxed but insured is perfectly legal, providing you aren't driving it. But having a car taxed but uninsured is a no no, even if you're not driving it. I forgot to tax one of my cars last year when DVLA weren't sending out reminders.
For 5 days it's unlikely to be an issue, but it's against the rules.

You cannot backdate a Sorn, any more than you can backdate insurance, it will start from the day you Sorn it.So after delaying my next insurance by a few days to get the price down because I have use of another car, I just realised that is not allowed !

As has already been said I really wouldn't worry about it, for a 5 day lapse nothing is likely to come of it, but I would sort the ins pronto if you haven't already done so
