M48 into A48 Cardiff Approach

I think I found the most unfair positioning of a camera van today.
As I was coming off the M48 onto the A48 I came across a camera van almost immediately beyond the first 50 mph signs.
The M48 stops...but turns into the A48, which as a dual carriageway has a 70 mph limit. But it's actually a 50.
The first sign is not on the main carriageway, but on the entry sliproad. Then there are two 50 signs on the main carriageway - but BANG there is a camera van straight after the signs. I was on the brakes when I saw the signs but I don't think I was quick enough to avoid the van. I recon I was doing 55-60 mph.
Has anyone else been caught on on this road?

If at that point you hadn't gone through the signs then you weren't speeding.
If you had then perhaps you should have been paying more attention.
The (generic) positioning of a camera that you mention is VERY common (as in just after a limit change) so I am not sure why you would be surprised by it.

You must be new to that road and at that time of day, there have been camera vans on those bridges/overpasses for at least 9 years since i have been using it.
Keep your eyes on the signs, no excuse to be speeding along there at that time of day as its the same between the times of 0700 to 09:00, then from 16:00 to 18:00. Some days theyre not there but more often than not they are.

Yes it was the first time driving down to Cardiff. The time was about 11.00.
I might be lucky and find that I was under the limit, but I suspect slightly above. I remember slowing and flashing a car to pull out from the slip so might be fine (and not get fined).
I guess it was a shock to see 50 mph signs and a camera straight away!
I will certainly pay attention next time.

Couldn't disagree more. I've used it largely M40, M4, M3 for commuting and it's been invaluable, albeit has taken me on some wild backroads over the however many years since it was introduced.
I've found it more reactive to traffic than Apple, Google and Amipro. But they're all pretty good nowadays.
Getting out of mad traffic situations like leaving or arriving at festivals using Google on a mates VW van, Waze has been more dynamic and got us out/in the area (if not out of the site). Also in rural areas EE has been more reliable than other services in the South of England in my experience over the last 3 years.
That particular piece of Cardiff beauty (M48/A48)is an absolute trap with speed limits badly signed and going up and down for no apparent reason. The A470 up to Brecon has similar slow down /speed up sections for no reason and again badly signposted. All the locals brake and then push on as they know where the fixed cameras are. But I've a couple of Welsh mates that have been caught out by mobiles on the arbitrary temporary sections reduced to 50.
I've learned to not trust any satnav or the BMW display for speed limits as they're not updated. But if things were better signed I would feel better.

They seem to absolutely love signs, especially when they can get someone at threshold as they safely coast down, I swear they expect inflicting their will using the tool of law on safe threshold drivers coasting down couldn't possibly render those safe drivers, an unsafe, preoccupied, mentally distracted or upset group of drivers wherever they go...I might be lucky and find that I was under the limit, but I suspect slightly above. I've talked to a few now, and what they won't do, as dangerous people inflicting their will on "safe" but a tad fast drivers, especially at signs far from anything the limit protects, is consider that if their vans were pulled from the road today, their "negative" impact on road safety would take months to dissipate, and may never fully die out.
As you can see, I am not a fan. Hope you don't get a ticket, but if they possibly can, they will get one to you.
Used to drive this route daily and never saw the camera van on that specific bridge (but handy to know they do sit there). They usually sat on a bridge further down (between Pentwyn and Llanederyn).
I’m always cautious on this stretch because the police do occasionally monitor speed (because it’s a route where many people don’t comply with the speed limit). Seems a bit harsh considering the proximity of the bridge to the limit change.
Which way was the window facing? If it’s measuring speed after you go under the bridge that seems logical but on approach would be very harsh (to say the least)

Speed Kills... Slower is safer... So they say, denying the bigger picture, and their negative impact whilst increasing the risk of incidents thought the entire road network.
