HMCTS Refund - No idea why??
Discussion
My wife was caught speeding in April, fixed camera, bang to rights.
She took the 3 points and paid the fine (I paid the fine ) which was £100.
A few days ago, I got an email from HMCTS saying they were issuing a refund of the £100. No explanation, no context.
I just left it and today recieved the £100 back in my account.
No letter, no contact.
Anyone had the same or any idea before I try and trawl through actually speaking to someone who might have a clue at HMCTS?

Thanks AGT, I must not have read the letter properly as I didn’t see anything about sending the license back. Seems archaic to need to do that when there is no paper part and all points are stored electronically?
Edit: sorry just saw the bit about providing the license number, very possible I didn’t do that. What’s your thoughts on the outcome of this from here?

Super helpful thanks.
Some digging shows it will likely be a Band A fine plus costs. Hopefully not too painful.
Good luck with this one - just think of all the man hours put into sending letters/refunding you etc when they know full well it's all on a computer database anyway! Some digging shows it will likely be a Band A fine plus costs. Hopefully not too painful.
Bumping this, still not heard a bean about this. Offence was April ‘23, it’s now May (nearly June!) ‘24 and nothing, no letters, no emails, nothing.

Says - ‘ How long do the Police have to issue a Single Justice Procedure Notice?
For most offences, the process must be commenced within 6 months. However, that does not mean that you must receive the process within 6 months. It is by no means uncommon for the process to be commenced a week or so before the time expires, and to arrive after the 6 month deadline.’
Guess we just wait (more) and see what happens?

I would’t pay much attention to anything on a fake solicitors’ website.Guidance here -

Do you think they’ll just let her off then?
Many, many years ago I got a speeding ticket and sent a cheque to cover the fine, however I left the payment rather late. The cheque was subsequently returned to me, with a cover letter saying that it was sent in too late, and that I would receive further correspondence about the speeding offence.
A further letter then arrived a short while later saying that the ticket was being dropped and that the matter was closed with no further action.
Bit of a result in the end.
random thought.
There have been occasions where cameras have been ruled to be "non-compliant" when someone has took it all the way to court. If you were caught and prosecuted but later found to be in that clutch of prosecutions that were not viable; would they:
a. Just issue you a refund and wipe the points
b. Inform you of the ruling and ask for refund details
c. Wait for you to chase them
Could this have happened to the OP or am i talking kaka?

...and then dispute it anyway, or tell you you're out of time, or should have not taken the points in the first place and appealed.Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
