Hi All,

Unbelievable bad luck drove down to the countryside for Christmas my tyres by time I got there were 1.58mm just under the limit. My parents live in a remote part of Devon the nearest shop open is a 30-40min drive let alone a tyre garage.

On boxing day we realised I needed new tyres, all mobile fitters were booked until 4th January in the county, I live 200 miles away.

I stayed an extra day so I could get the tyres fitted at the earliest opportunity.

I went to the nearest garage to get tyres fitted the next day after prepaying on boxing day for 2 new tyres.

I kid you not 2 doors from the tyre shop and 5 mins before my appointment I get pulled over.

I stupidly mentioned i’m getting new tyres and have an appointment in 5 minutes. I showed him the prepaid receipt and he spoke to the garage to confirm.

Reported me and took my details and cautioned me for 2 bald tyres.

Said I should have got the vehicle towed to the garage 20 miles as no mobile fitters in the area.

Do I have any chance what are your thoughts?

What a jobsworth!

Any chance of slipping the garage some cash for a report/statement showing 1.61mm tread?

Surely if you were getting a ticket he’d of given you it at the roadside. If you end up getting done for 2 tyres then what a complete ar##hole the copper is. If you showed him proof of getting them changed etc then he is part of the reason police get a bad name.
Who got the reading of 1.58mm as that’s quite specific.

Lesson learnt. Check your tyres more regularly and change them before they get to 1.6mm. Tyre performance generally drops off quickly below 3mm so should be changed then.

Just google "freeman on the land" "bald tyres", follow the instructions, and you'll be fine.

1.6mm in the middle of winter ffs.

You were unlucky - what did he pull you for in the first place?

It is unlikely the copper stopped him on a hunch.

My guess is that the car adorned the ‘rat look’ or was in some other way caught the attention of the police or was driven… badly. So the POPO decided to pull him over for a word. And then our hero whilst trying to deflect multiple issues on his car mentioned the tyres as the dpf delete, pop and bang remap, slammed ,angel eyed, fat piped Audi a3 tdi furnished in silver with a black bonnet was basically unroadworthy.

100% this. You'd have to be a total jobsworth to report someone for this.

Why did he pull you over in the first place?

Or cop said was getting getting considered for summons just to put the sts up OP and nothing arrives in the post and as a consequence you will never let tyres get close to legal limit again due to your arse going 50p/20p this time.

Porsche Cayenne Hybrid 2011. Very Good Condition 86,898 miles.

Worth noting I was not asked for ID or show any I did not get a ticket or receipt despite him having a ticket printing thing. I was cautioned and had to sign a touch screen thing he didn’t say why or what I had to sign.

And did tell the tyre shop they are honest people round here lol.

He spoke to the garage to confirm I was getting 4 new tyres in 5mins. Showed him the prepaid receipt with the appointment time 5mins and I was on the same road as the tyre shop.

I’ve taken my personalised plate off when the logbook comes through gonna change it to another plate hopefully that works.

It always sucks when you genuinely try do the right thing I haven’t driven it for 2-3 days since finding out been stuck out here took time off work to sort the tyres.

I’ve got screenshots proving no mobile fitters at 4 garages available until 4th January. I’m just meant to get the train 200 miles to work, then 200 miles back and get my tyres fitted on 4th January I guess.

I would have thought that considering you can drive a vehicle potentially with no brakes etc to an mot garage to get an mot that you could drive to the nearest tyre shop to get tyres but hey ho.

The receipt for tyres fitted and invoice is dated yesterday as their website had an error and had to wait a day to get ANY tyres in that size.

I’m doing a video screen recording the time on my iphone showing that 1 hour after the vehicle had 4 brand new tyres.

I pulled over straight away and was polite at all times not like I was being an ahole

Well you waited a long time to post something, but 1.58mm, as some have said, unbelieveable.
