Admitting guilt?!
Discussion
just a thought, but is it a good idea to publically admit to our terminal velocities - especially with the current Big Brother mentality..?
There is a sort of anti-Hero status to being the fastest, yet we all beleive in appropiate speed.
So with this in mind, 160, M3. A few weeks ago. Empty road.
But is this a victimless crime? I think so. Did anyone even register my presence? no. Was it safe: yes. Nothing to hit, nothing to avoid.
So why do I feel that I can't talk about this to my work colleagues & non-biking friends?
rgds.

Not having a go at anybody here, esp Herts, but why do guys feel the need to boast about top speeds? You're not alone, when people ask me how fast I've had to drive I tell them with a tingle of pride.
I wonder if we simply have a need to get it out of our system, to see if we have the bottle or to see what our vehicle can do, or just to see what its like?
Perhaps we should petition the government to close a section of quiet motorway one Sunday so we can all get it out of system.....because the truth is, once you've done it kind of looses its appeal.
Having been one that travels at such velocity now and again, would you agree Herts?

You're quite clearly Graham Norton's secret love, Mondy..
mondeoman said:best I've managed is just over 135 and I wnat to do more - when its clear to do so and I'm the only one in the car. Couldn't do it for sustained periods tho - closing speeds way too much for me.
I've tested the speed limiters of various German cars.. not in this country of course..

Ah that will be the gentle creep of socially derived shame you're feeling there. Bit like how its not clever to discuss mirthfully "how many pints you had and how an earth you got back home in your car you'll never know..."
Or more recently, why you feel ever so slightly uncomfortable looking at childrens arses during huggies adverts....you pedo'.

A fine line between what is ok for *us* to do, and other people. Seems we're all a bit guilty of double standards. As to the answer, I don't know fully.
But what I do know is that if a person is addicted to alchol or drugs, there are government run places you can get help without cost to you, and with no penalty.
So why then, don't they let us have a bit of road with no limits on now and then? yeah, to get it out of our systems in a controlled way. And don't say "do a track day", unless HMG is going to pay for it.
A sense of responsibility? not so certain about this, I just think that seeing people recoil visibly when you tell them has to mean something.
Yeah, that Boxster was fast. So I am told.

I think you've misunderstood me. I'm not having a go, I'm just asking why blokes in general feel the need to boast about top speeds, and if they had the chance to go as fast as they wanted, would that need dissappear.
Speaking from personal experience I would say so. When I had my bike the challenge soon dropped off from going as fast as possible in a straight line to trying to get around a bend as fast as possible.
So, as I said before, petition the government, get them to shut a quiet stretch of motorway for a day and lets see if getting it out of our system works..

I agree...I redckon it's the challenge to see if you can do it, and once you have done it, you have to tell someone! Cos otherwise what's the point (160, A1M, 2:00am, Esprit) Also, partly to check what you bought can do what it said it would do I spose....
Interestingly (or not) it wasn't as exciting when running my car out at Bruntingthorpe despite higher speed (216)...maybe cos of the lack of adrenaline fulled risk, however slight??
And yeah, in my experience the interest wears off pretty quick too....but is that just cos we're older and wiser??

When Essex CC 'Safety Team' were attempting to persuade bikers that the bike speed limit is Not Car speed limit *2 + 10%, I suggested that they get a racing circuit and let the bikers turn up and vent some frustrations... Unfortunately they did not think that was a good way to spend money..
Agree with the get it out of the system approach.
How about all those abandoned airfields, bits of waste ground etc. outside of towns are opened up specifically for people to go do what they want?
All at your own risk (lets get away from the nanny state).
If the nova boy lappers want to go there at 3am and end up killing themselves then
a) it gets them out of town where they would hurt others.
b) gets them out of the gene pool before they have chance to breed.

JasonF, very witty !
In terms of acceleration & maneovreability, we have the upper hand on the road (unless tangling with the Zonda/Lambo brigade), so why on earth do we have to stick to the same limits as clumsy cars?
Seems like the bigger the vehicle, the lower the speed limit, so why not raise the limit for bikes & light weight sports cars?
rgds!

I've often thought this after all a Bike @ 70mph wouldn't cause the same damage as 2 tons of car, trucks are limited to 56mph, I'm sure if you used the same "formula" for bikes (speed x weight = etc...) they should be allowed at least 140mph! any takers?....
