What to expect from a jaunt down south...
Discussion
Right, I'm casually escorting a young ladyfriend of mine back to her house in (dun dun duuuuh) Nottingham...
What do I have to expect on the roads? Being a northern monkey I've only VERY rarely seen a mobile rev-gen van, and SPECS is none-existant up here. I know about the SPECS cameras in Nottingham, however I'm not fussed about them as I pretty much bypass notts going where I'm going.
Any PH'ers in the locality? Enlighten me as to what to keep an eye out for and what the likelyhood of coming back with my licence intact would be (a score out of 10 would be nice, I don't knowingly speed however the whole 'entrapment' factor has to be brought into play here, considering my local knowledge of the place is a resounding 0%)
Thanks
Dave

Watch out for those things called speed limits. You will know if you are in one because they are usually clearly written on a tin plate with a red ring around them (unless they have been spun around by a scrote or overgrown, in which case they are defendable if you get stopped over the limit). The only places you will not see them continually is in built up areas with street lights. If this is the case it is a sure bet it is a 30 mph limit.
If you stick to the posted limits in urban areas, I can guarantee you will cone back with a clean licence, regardless of SPECS Gatso or any other device.
Have a good trip
Impeccable advice madcop, tin plates y'say? hehe!
I'm being co-driven with a local so there shouldn't be any bother but I remember not so long ago talking to some PH'ers about mobile speed traps, and how there's a higher concentration of them once you get below - mmm - York.
Me being a Geordie, I've only seen about five mobile traps in all my motoring life.
As for foreign areas etc - if I don't know the place I'll stick religiously to the limit, under it infact - I like telling car hire firms etc that my licence is 'clean' and I'd prefer to keep it that way. The only reason why I asked about notts in particular was due to the SPECS trials etc, and quite frankly - I don't know what to expect. Whether it is like Hull (with a camera every 150 yards it would seem) or somewhere like 'oop north' with a camera every 150 miles or so!
The only reason a hirecar is a requirement is because I told my friend my car wouldn't make it down there and sure enough, today it starts doing an impression of a James Bond vehicle - ie smokescreen out the back, so she's staying off the road for a little while until I can sort out what to do. I know hire firms aren't too happy about getting NIP's so I'd like to keep them sweet.

Wish they were that far apart!
Not seen many mobiles to be honest, one or two in quiet villages though (recently Linby). Many of the gatso's seem empty the way people go through on red . Don't risk it though, eh.
Don't think it's too bad away from the ring road.
HTH
Well I'm back, and it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be. The SPECS cams on the ring road in notts are actually really bloody good! *everyone* sitting at 35mph (40 limit) and the traffic flow was superb. Plus they're all yellow - which does help!
It's a lot more clearly marked out also, there's no guestimating the speed - everywhere has a 'tin sign' (as madcop put it!) as opposed to up here, where there's one every mile, if you're lucky, IF the local kids haven't nicked it!
Not much numpty-ism on the M1 either, couple tailgaters and some woman who had the shock of her life when, travelling north in the outside lane - the traffic grinds to a halt (I think it was a couple lorries playing 56/57 overtaking). Here's me in my nice shiny 52 plate pug 206 hire car, simply yomp on the brakes and pull up to a safe halt (also flick the 4-ways on to give advance warning the traffic has stopped - I always do this) and all you hear is 'skreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetchhhh' as she comes to within about 6" of the rear end of my car - obv wasn't paying much attention to the road ahead.
Still, back unscathed - I did follow limits but even so I'm still a bit paranoid so 14 days to go and we'll see how far I get!!
