This morning she telephones me at work to say that she has letter from the police for doing 36 in a 30.

She says the letter says that the old bill have video evidence. What should we do, is there anything that can be done?

She is fairly new to the area and I think she thought it was a 40 area (outskirts of town).

Any advice gratefully received.

thanks

Ed

Sounds like 'take it on the chin time' to me.

Well given that its only 36, l would have a little flutter. Ask to see the evidence seeing as they have advertised the fact, you don't remember who was driving, that should do it.
After this you can then look into questioning the measurement device and operators abilities especially as the limit has been exceeded by so little. Get a good solicitor. Have a look at www.PePiPoo.com

Oh yeah, check the speeding occurence location for signing deficiencies (Like sign was obscured by a hedge etc...)

Yes frankly. Did she actually do it? If so its £60, 3pts and who cares. If she's adamant the charge is unfair then have a go by all means.

What to do about it: get a radar detector...and go on an Advanced Driving observation course...it really does help to deal with spotting both limits signs and the blasted cameras....

VIDEO ? isn't this inadmissible in court?

DO NOT admit to anything. DEMAND to see the evidence, or tell them to drop the case.

Video isn't a reliable medium for evidence - what if the motor is running slow? makes the cars look faster, that's what.

"Take it on the chin" ? ummm. I think this expression is very distasteful, may as well write "take it up ...". Do not give in, consider your options. Even if video is there, can it be seen who is driving?

Jesus - 36mph - for fack sake! A little petty to say the least.

How much leeway is there on our speed limits anyway? Is 35mph the max allowed here? And what about the 40 and 60 limits? What can you get away with? It must be safer to keep eyes on the road than stare at the speedo constantly FFS.

Err. The cops normally give around 10% clock error. So if your clock is absolutely spot on you might get away with 33mph. 36mph (although on a wide road with no turnings, driveways, pavements etc seems like a crawl) is *way* above this..percentage wise....sorry.

I believe things used to be a good deal more lenient...but we are talking about a 30 here...not a NSL...

madcop etc al would know better than me...

There's a camera in the 30 limit in Chalfont St Peter that was catching people at 34 a few weeks ago.

Not me, I hasten to add!!

Even if you know your in the wrong fight it all the way, the more people that fight for everyones human rights the sooner all this highway robbery will come under control, I'm actually in favour of speed cameras in the right places but I'm yet to see any outside schools or in housing estates, if everyone asked for all the paperwork the system would jam up in weeks, together we can make a difference.

36 in a 30 is 20% over the limit. If the posted limit is 30 then 30 is the acceptable limit, although as Don says you would be unlucky to get done for 33.

Most 30 limits are in built areas with kids / schools etc so do you really think the limit should be ignored?

Don't get me wrong speeding is dangerous but soon everyone in this country that drives (legally) will be a criminal! The penalty (when taken as a whole, not just the points + fine) is stiffer for exceeding the limit by 5mph than for exceeding the limit by 65mph in a stolen car after liberating Currys of their surplass stock!

Out side a school no, but some 'built up areas' are very open / clear / straight etc.

40s and 60s the same....

44 and 66 respectively. 77 on the motorway/dual carriageway one presumes. Although the old de-facto motorway limit appears to be 85mph I wouldn't bet 3 points on it if I spotted the chap with the radar gun.

Funnily enough when I did get a 3 pointer (see, I'm admitting it) I thought the limit was 70 and was doing 74 according to North Wales' finest. Of course...the blasted limit was 60mph as I had misinterpreted the sort of road it was...

Blithely carried on looking at the chap with the radar gun saying to the wife..."Oh its OK. I'm only just over the limit...."

All my own fault...

With the exception of the one camera that SGirl has mentioned in the Chalfonts I have never come across a camera in the 30 zone that goes off below 40.

Now, regardless of the rights and wrongs about this surely all speed limits, given that they are national things, should have the same level of tolerance.

Nicking someone for 36 in a 30 by camera is nothing more than revenue generation.

Matt.

Call me a numptie, but I havent looked at the highway code for, err ages. How can you tell if a road is a 60 and not a 70? The black / white striped circular sign on an A road means NSL =70mph. Right?!...

70mph is only on dual carriageways or motorways.

60mph on unrestricted single carriageway A Roads.

NSL 60MPH single carriageway, 70MPH dual carriageway.

Won't call you a numpty, even though you asked so nicely

You would think.
Unfortunately each area responsible for installing/maintaing them gets to set their own limits.
