Driving back from Köln in my shiny new 355 back towards Frankfurt I was travelling at 120 km/h on a 100 km/h limit thinking that I would not get flashed or pulled for this tiny amount over the limit.

I was wrong! From nowhere a police opel vectra came speeding up behind me and overtook me then pulled me into the next petrol station.

I didn't have a chance to get out the car as they raced up to me and asked me for my documents. Showed them everything I had (as the law says in Germany) and then after them having a seat in the car and talking about it for 15 mins they said "OK thank you, goodbye".

They never mentioned speeding at all!!.

Welcome done to the German Plod!!!!

The german speed cameras show no mercy though, I have a pending one month ban for 30 km/h over the speed limit incident!

I thought that the Autobahn was a "speed restriction free" freeway, I aslways understood that you could drive as fast as you like in Germany

Obviously I am mis-informed

Only certain stretches of the autobahn are unrestricted. Where there is a limit in force you normally find a nice array of cameras, especially at road works.

Er no. As you won't enter Germany on the way to Belgium.

AFAIK the Dover-Ostend bit is unrestricted, but you'll need a special licence to drive on that route

No.

During the F1 weekend the police confiscated 52 cars for speeding in and around Spa. Of these the highest speed was about 207 kmh. I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions.

Full details as were advised to me can be found in my posting on Bug G's "Nurburgring or bust" thread on the Ultima board. (URL below)

Bloody hell - whats the world coming to?!

I'm planning to have a multitude of scanning devices fitted to my new car. Are you saying I will be landed in trouble if I drive through France then? I can't imagine they can detect a detector - if you know what I mean. Also, I wonder if it's best to get a fully integrated and hidden unit, or a seperate one than can be quickly hidden. Ideas?.....

I've got a jammer and a geodesy.

When in europe I turn the jammer off.

In the UK I could call my lawyers in and have a scrap. When abroad you're just another bloody foreigner and the local BiB couldn's give a toss.

Enjoy the new audi.

Deester I have a definative answer re your UK licence. The German Police cannot touch it (yet). They can take details of it and you will be issued with a German domestic licence which they will subsequently endorse or disqualify if you have been naughty enuf

Madcop, thanks for your answer. This has been mentioned to me by a few different sources now.

My problem is the German police want my licence, what do I say to them? Do I get a German or British lawyer.

Thanks again madcop!

Deester, first ask them which law forces you to give them your licence
("Welches Gesetz besagt, daß ich Ihnen meinen Britischen Führerschein aushändigen muß?").
If they do not seem to cooperate, suspend negotiations and consult a German lawyer, as they know domestic laws.

cheers,

I was done 3 weeks ago in Belgium, doing 138 km/h on the motorway. I wasn't even the fastest, plenty belgians were going faster, but they pulled me, and I had to pay EUR 200.00 on the spot, or get my car confiscated. They seem to pull foreigners more than locals because with such an option, you cannot contest the fine.

many years ago when in Germany I had a Steyr Puch 650 TR 2, which probably doesn't mean anything to anybody. Trust me, it was bloody fast, and looked like a Fiat 500. I was a hothead, I went through a village WAY too fast and was stopped by a policeman. He pored all over the car, asked for a test drive and then sent me off on my way.
