Please pass me the sedatives! Having just opened my post I am informed that my vehicle was contravening the road traffic act and to provide details of the driver if other then myself.
I have spoken with an officer and discovered the offence was 88 mph in a 50mph zone, the vehicle was caught by an officer using a hand held speed measure device, who made a note of the vehicle details, time location etc. I thought the police had to at least have a photo as evidence. Apparently cars are braking to avoid a speed camera half a mile away and this was to catch those drivers.

Where do I stand if I cannot identify the driver? Will I get a ban if they don’t come forward? If they come forward will they get a ban? Is hiding in a bush with a stop watch and a note pad a fair cop?

This happened to a mate... turned out it wasn't him, but his car had been cloned (his reg plate put on a stolen vehicle that looked the same).

He got off, as there was a photo, whcih meant he could identify it as not being his car... but he was also on holiday (in the US!) at the time... which probably helped!

Anything is a 'fair cop' so to speak. They do NOT need to advertise that they are manning speed traps etc..They only do that to try and pretend it is all about safety and nothing to do with revenue.

Were you driving at the time?

Was there anyone who could have been driving your car?

If so, have a word with them. If not, have you any proof about where you were at the time...

So who WAS driving?

Can you prove you were on the train? (tickets? credit card receipt? people you were with? time you picked up the car from somewhere?)

Yes, if you can prove you couldn't possibly have been in the car at the time then it's Someone Else's Problem. My ex-car was clocked doing something stupid in Carlisle one day while I was at work in London. I just sent back the paperwork saying that I wasn't driving because I'd sold the car - that was it. No further enquiries.

Cost me a stamp, though.

Had a family party, lots of cars at my folks place so left mine on the drive with keys as a genral run about to save playing musical cars everytime a journey was to be made. 70% sure of the driver but need to have a chat with them later today dout they even realise that that they were speeding as fast road.
The thing that has got me worked is that for such a potentailly large breach of the traffic act the car was not even stopped to "educate" the driver there and then.
