False Plate Fallout
Is clamping down on speeders having a detrimental effect on catching real criminals?
Discussion
ws wondering this myself when I found out that the garage I picked my elise up from had put the wrong plates on...the back was right (228) but the front was wrong (223)...guses it was an easy mistake to make, but I actually didnt spot it for a couple of weeks...cos I dont pay any attention to my own number!.....that could have been very unfortunate if I'd binned it before finding out....
quote:That doesn't help very much when your digits are all the same (666) and the letters are significant (TVR)!
I was advised to mix the digits of my reg number up in an accidental fashion and then to change them accidentally every six months, just in case you build up a few claims.
I once bought a car that actually accidentally did have the wrong plate on it. The plate ended in HHK and the reg doc was HKK or something like that.
The funny thing is, going on the fact that the dealer name on the plate was different from the dealer I bought it from, it must have been like that for some time.
I didn't realise until I rejected the car (7000 miles and one dent later) for having had a big shunt that they neglected to tell me about.
Kinda missed an opportunity with that one though :-D
Just to put a downer on it Fraud use of a reg mark is actually a criminal conviction not points on yer licence. It gets you a CRO number (what 'real' criminals get) and it certainly dosn't look good on your C.V. I have done a few for it in the past and it isn't that hard to prove, so if you are contemplating it you better have a better story than the ones published so far.
Excuse me? The car was supplied to me with the wrong plate on it by a franchised BMW dealer. But the plate was so similar to the reg doc that it was very easy to miss the fact that it was incorrect.
Are you seriously implying that I could have been done for that?

quote:Should be safe enough then, as in my own experience of having cars broken into or stolen, and being burgled, the police do bugger all about real crime.

Whoever you are 'Ron Jobson', I think you're being unfair to the real John Robson.
I think John is a very useful and informative participant in this section of Pistonheads. Without a balanced view, this could degenerate into aggrieved motorists just letting off steam.
It takes a good deal of bottle to make youself known as the 'old bill' in a potentially unfriendly forum and try to put the other side of the debate. I'm sure advice from John has helped people, and will continue to do so.
I always read contributions from John with interest, if I agree with them or not. Let's keep it civilized!
Time to go out for a burn I think!
Matt (who doesn't speed, honset officer!)
Don't disagree with you Matt, John is very welcome here and has probably saved a few people from sleepless nights. However, I am sure he is not oblivious to the growing feeling that speeding appears to be the crime of the moment, and, totally coincidentally, it makes money for the authorities.
quote:What's wrong with aggreived motorists letting off steam. Where else can we do it ? There's nothing balanced about the governments policy re speeding and motorists in general. John may be very reasonable and a nice chap, but he is part of the machinery that enforces very unpopular laws. Are you suggesting that John Robson can post but Ron Jobson should lay off ?Doesn't seem very balanced to me.

No but its a bit unfair taking the Piss out of John. John contributes a lot to the gassing station and is often the voice of reason to a lot of debates. If we frighten him off we will all be poorer without his contributions, and possibly in jail!!!!!!!!
The law is written by politicians and we all know what tossers they are, the Police only do what they are told, although ok like every occupation they employ a few tossers aswell. From What has been Written i think we could do with a few more JR's in the police force.. (unless he nicks me for 150mph past a school)

Thanks for the support. 'The police' in general do get a slating in the press, on wew sites etc but we are all individuals, some good some ??? but that is the same with any job.
Just a point though when one of us does stick our necks out and speak up (a certain Chief Constable plus an letter from a retired traffic cop daily mail last week) backing up what most of you are saying about enforcing speed limits on a 0 tolerance basis they get flooded with calls to resign and surrender their licences. Can we ever win????. Oh well I suppose if life were that simple and I didn't get a bit of grief and aggro now and then it would be boring.
I do hope that both John Robson and "Ron Jobson" will continue to post. Its informative/a laugh/thought provoking in equal measure.
The "good guys" have my support. Stupid regulations don't...but there's always an argument as to what is "stupid" and what isn't....and that's healthy/fun.
