In a follow up to another thread....

Ahem. Some of you on this site (judging by the speeding survey) may have gathered a few points on your driving licence. We've all heard about the fines, the points, the bans etc.

Frankly this stuff doesn't cost so much in real terms. £60 to drive at at any speed you like - bargain! (I should point out I am not condoning outrageous speeding at this point :illgetmycoat: :smallprint

The real cost has got to be in increased insurance premiums.

So....admit it. You got some points. What did it do your premiums?

Don,

3 points for SP40, 65mph in a 40mph limit (dual carriageway) in the Audi not the TVR. No difference to the insurance premium.

Cheers,
JSG.

Got an 8 week ban and £600 fine for 122mph.

2 week ban and £200 fine for 97mph

As for insurance premiums - It hasn't really affected me. I've got a company fleet policy - any employee, over 25 blah, blah, blah. I put the Marcos on it and didn't get asked about points.

That's nice to hear! Now...what did you need to tell them, if anything. Did they ask the question - "Have you had any motoring offence convictions?"

Legal totting up is three years on points I believe.

My insurance company asked me to declare my previous 5 years - which I did. 9pts all SP30

They gave me a quote - fine
I called back - got the same figure when I declared no sp30s at all.

(I currently have 6 points under three years)

So - what did it cost - total of £160 in fines !

Don,

I actually phoned to tell both insurers (Audi and TVR) and they just made a note and said there would be no increase. Neither renewal premium seemed high and when I insured the TVR this year with a different company they weren't bothered.

Since the insurers seem quite good at working out risk based on all sorts of factors, if the premium doesn't go up for speeders then this implies that people who break the speed limit are not statistically more dangerous than people who don't. Surely that can't be right, we all know that speed kills.

SPXX's (had a few - but only 1 at a time!) no effect on insurance, although "Privelege" insurance tried to increase their premium after an SP, I changed insurer to one who not only didn't worry about the SP but was cheaper to boot.

I am currently waiting for a summons though, which when it's all done will doubtless have an effect on my premiums.

I'll let you know the outcome as and when

Don't know exactly what it cost me but 6 points and an at fault crash really bent me over and rojered me with an overley large root vegetable when it came to getting insured...

I would check the small print on the company insurance , no doubt you or somebody in the company has declared all convictions and bans.
If an accident happens with you being involved , nowadays they count it as you being the last person to drive a car that gets broken into then they will slither like a wet eel to get out of paying up.

My last year's premium was under £400. This year's
over £500.

On the one hand, my car is worth 15-20% less than
last year's value, but on the other hand, I've got another
year's no claims bonus.

No speeding fines or other motoring convictions,
and yes, I've fished around in the market place.

Swines.

One insurance company that I got a quote from
had the bare faced cheek to say that they had put
up premiums because of so many un-insured drivers.

Doh.

I'm afraid that's just them being honest. The insurance co's pay out more due due to scrotes and pass the cost on to those of us who but insurance.

I've just taken out a new policy that was £100 cheaper than last year. Even with a sp60. Bargain!

Mine went from around £800 to about £1400 after an sp60 complete with 21 day ban and £250 fine. This was on a 10 year old polo worth a few peanuts and a packet of m&m's. For some reason it went down to £900 ish after the 6 month policy I was forced to buy. Must've been a bad time of year for insurance I guess.
I hate to think what it's gonna be when I get the impending sp50

Viscous circle, innit ?

They keep putting up premiums, fewer folks interested
in paying up, more folks driving around un-insured,
more costs for the rest of us.

EXAMPLE:

An friend of a friend has just got a two year ban
(don't ask why).

Given current insurance rates, I quite honestly beleive
that he'll never get a sane insurance quote
in his lifetime again.

Which just encourages him to continue nicking cars
and driving them around un-insured.

Hmm, I won't bother asking why he got the ban then
