Walking home from work this evening along the side of a busy london arterial route, I happened to notice a couple of policemen blowing their whistles. Seemed a bit odd...

Turned out they watching the cars go past, whistling each time one went past without a tax disk.
Then a big bunch of them 200 yards down the road were merrily stopping plenty of cars, handing out producer forms and generally making life hard for those without tax.

This was great, all the normal old nissans that cut you up, jump the red lights, illegal right turns were all lined up at the side of the road :-)

The the first time in the last 3 years i've seen this done at rush hour on this road.

Its a genuinely dangerous road with at least two pedestrian fatilties in the last year, and i see an accident at least one a month on the half mile stretch i walk along for my daily commute.

Its an awful road, bus lanes, red routes, double yellows, double reds, single reds, parking boxes, badly designed junctions, blind turns, cash & carry's, double parking all the time.

So one whistle, and 5 blokes with there luminous jackets take out the worst 5% of cars, the ones without tax and probably insurance.
no cameras, no databases, just a sharp pair of eyes and the brave pills to stand in the middle of the road. fantastic.

can they do that every night please :-)

There's a lot to be said for that. Forget poxy cameras. Pull 'em over, check out the car and find that it's got bald tyres, no insurance, 20 illegal immigrants and a bag of swag in the back. Much better clear up rates, and restores faith in plod with us law abiding citizens.

I am always impressed when I hear things like this - good old fashioned effective policing. One sure way of getting the important jobs done.

Good work dibble! This is how to build good relations with the public - shame the government don't seem to realise it!

Saw the same thing myself the other day. Plod one side of Hammersmith Bridge with whistles and a van the other side guiding offenders into a side street.

Top work!

Matt.

Was in Scotland driving a jap bucket of sh1te down the A9, and getting low on petrol. The signed services had been closed for petrol for about 3 months, just a greasy spoon little Chef. AS the rubbish cart was literally breathing fumes only and I was rather annoyed that a signed service......well wasn't.
Plod in a large jam sarnie pulls up and politely told me where to get the nearest petrol (about 7 miles). Said he'd follow me if i thought I'd not make it!!!!

BUT the nicest was, he warned me where a particularly nasty electronic highwayman was situated... "just in case you're in a hurry"

TOP FELLA! By way of PH....thanks Mate!

I was rather lucky as someone came to view my S on Friday and pointed out the tax had run out a month ago, don’t think I got the reminder either.

Still, all taxed and legal again now.

There will be an increase in the tax disc spot check as an excuse to check all other documnets - especially registered keepers in LONDON

in the run up to congestion taxation.

I have no problems with this - most of those without tax are also uninsured !

My favourite was parking outside the local rough council estate and vertually stopping all cars leaving. All the usual checks were done resulting in at least 2 disco drivers (banned). We also seized un road worthy cars which was lots of fun. Makes burglary difficult without your car.

Swoop on untaxed vehicles a success
by Nigel Freedman

Abandoned: Operation Crackdown has been hailed a success

A bid to drive abandoned and illegally-parked vehicles off city streets has scored another success.

Police, council and driving licence officers discovered 195 untaxed vehicles in their latest swoop on the Westbourne area of Hove.

Another 23 vehicles were given fixed penalty notices and 14 more were issued with red notices giving the owners seven days to move them or they would be towed away.

The move was part of Operation Crackdown, launched in the Westbourne and Wish areas of Hove two weeks ago.

Brighton and Hove City Council has joined the initiative and welcomed the latest figures.

Conservative group leader and Westbourne councillor Brian Oxley has offered to write to the DVLA at Swansea in a bid to speed up prosecution of vehicle owners caught by the operation.

A council spokeswoman said: "With the DVLA and the police we can make a huge difference."

Police discovered 280 untaxed vehicles during a blitz of the Westbourne area last week.
