RADAR DETECTORS
Discussion
Bought a Euro 550. Seems to work a treat but only on some Gatsos. I presume that if the GATSO doesn't have a camerma installed and therefore no radar the detector won't be set off. Reason I'm surprised is that I passed around 10 cameras on the A17 to Norfolk and detector went off once!! Just shows how sly the police are having only 1 live camera in 10!!
Be grateful to know of any similar experiences,
cheers Rupert

I may be wrong here, but its my understanding that there are 3 kinds of Gatsos (excluding those at traffic lights):
1. Empty Box
2. Box equipped with radar + flash
3. Box equipped with radar, flash & camera
As far as I know, its the camera that's the expensive bit, so a few cameras are moved around the type 2's. Therefore, a gatso might trip your detector and even flash at you, but there's no guarrantee that there's a camera in there (and even if there is, has it got any film?)

hey can any of you lot clarify this point:
ARE radar detectors LEGAL to USE ?
ta. I feel a purchase coming on!
as i recall, the illegality element was based on the wireles and telegraphy act regarding interfering with signals - a court case determined that detectors didn't modify or 'read' the signal, only noted it's presence hence said act didn't apply and thus were legal to use.
that's as my addled-from-13-hours-of-work-on-saturday-brain tells me anyway!
Your right about the cameras. Just because there is a radar unit in them doesn't mean that there is a camera in there are well. Good idea to slow down through!
The Police don't actually pay for them, so basically it's down to what the Council in that area will buy.
Speeding detectors; Well your right when you mention Communications Acts. A radar detector doesn't 'intercept' the signal in the way the law relates to, so no offence there, however!!!
Ask yourselves the following questions; would the use of the radar detector help prevent you commiting an offence? An offence that you would commit without its use?
I would guess at yes, therefore, a straight up 'Pervert the Course of Justice'. And that's an offence you can be arrested for at some later date. You could also receive 'life imprisonment', although I can't see that happening, can you?
PS, Exactly the same as flashing to warn other motorists of a 'speed trap'! (Although if prosecuted, your more likely to be looking at a charge of 'Obstructing Police'
And yes, there are plenty of stated cases supporting this. If you must use them, keep them well hid!
