When they're used and it isn't foggy?

Is it the same for front and rears?

(picking up on the thread www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=23&t=14627)

It is an offence to use fog lights when visibility is good.

Cheers,

Correct JSG. It applies equally to front and rear fog lights. However, front driving lights may be used in any conditions, but, must only come on when main beam is on and must switch off when reverting to dipped beam.

I reckon use of foglights tell you a lot about the driver... Front Fogs on = Bit of a flash git but probably keen driver and alert... Rear Fogs = brain dead with little awarness of whats going on around them. Just my 2 pence worth ))

What's the penalty and is it endorsable? Anyone know?
And why isn't it enforced more?

From memory the offence is 'Excessive front/rear illumination' - a certain city region member got a fixed penalty for this a year or so back.

it's the other way round Kevin....Main beam blinds you when driving into fog

No, Kevins right. Front fog lights come on with dipped headlamps and can only be used in poor visibility. If the lamps are driving lamps rather than fog lamps they must be wired to only come on with main beam / switch off with dipped, they can then be used in any conditions to supplement main beam - but not in built up areas with streetlights etc...

Rubbish! Front fogs on means a bolt-on boy in a Saxo who thinks his car looks cooler!

There's a lot of new cars now that cancel the front fogs when you switch the ignition off. This means they need to be manually switched on every time by the muppets!

Cheers.... Andrew

What???

Front fogs on = Bit of a waer in my opinion. Probably the same person who thinks his Saxo/Clio/Polo/Metro can outgun my Chimaera and wants to prove it constantly in totally inappropriate places/conditions.

These people really p*ss me off.

On my car when the headlights are turned off it automatically cancels the rear fogs but leaves the fronts on, which is odd.
And explains why I was getting flashed at for a weeks after I got it, until I figured out how the car actually works

I agree - peopl who use foglights inapporpriately are clueless muppets, but I've said it before and I'll say it again. In some cars - Nissans are a prime example - it's quite possible to inadvertanly have front fogs on.

Because:

i) They're activated by a slip ring on the indicator stalk. Not stiff enough & easy to actuate when using the indicators.

ii) When you turn headlights off, rear fogs are deavtivated, front are not.

iii) There's a light on the cluster for the rear fogs, but not the front.

Presumably JohnL, you find the same in your Primula? Or am I just a heavy handed twat?

Either way I'd not take kindly to being ticketed on account of a design fault which affects all Nissans of the same age as mine.

'Zackly, that's the issue, that's the cunningly designed car.
You'd think, either both manually off, or both automatically off with the headlights. But one and not the other? Bizarre.

Kevin, the Prim's theoretically British. The Jap Toyota is much better (both manually off - I think!). It's also got more legroom, I have to wear thin soled shoes to be comfortable in the Prim. Which is also odd as Japanese people are smaller than British on the whole.

I suppose the question is 'who designed it this way' totally bizarre!

Carzee - Saxo's have the front foglight switch on the reglar light stalk as well - easy fix though, take the foglight bulbs out I mean, seriously, when was the last time you actually needed them?
