The penalties for having an illegally written/spaced/font numberplate are discussed fairly regularly, but what about if you chose to forgo a front or rear numberplate altogether?

Obviously it's illegal, but what penalty would you be looking at if you couldn't convince whoever stopped you that it had just fallen off and you weren't aware of the problem?

During a very hot summer I took my front plate off the Griffith that I had.

It was off for about a week before the police stopped me. I had the plate in the car & said it had fallen off, they just told me to replace it & were fine.

I think you can get a fine and maybe points for this if you get a nasty policeman.

I think its a £20 fine and non endorsable so just take it off and avoid all those laser camera points!

I read on this site that it is a non-endorsable offence, and the worst you can get is a thirty quid fine, no points. Don't believe everything you read on the Internet though!
I'll probably find out at some point because my front number plate is in my boot at the moment.

The law has recently changed, and I believe the maximum penalty is somewhere around £1000, and should you have a cherished number then you may have it confiscated.

This change was effected primarily to combat the baseball cap brigade with blue LED's and italic plates.

Spotted a lad the Mrs knows driving around in his fairly new Fiesta with no number plate front or rear...

When asked it turns out he is on 9 points, so would rather have whatever size fine than lose his license (and hence his job). He figures there is less chance of being spotted by plod than a speed camera, and even if they see him they will have to stop him (ie going the same direction, and not in heavy traffic) 'cos they wouldn't be able to trace him any other way.

And this is a otherwise decent bloke, that apart from incautious speeding (all sp30's), has never been in trouble with cops, steady job, pays his taxes, etc

Very sad and worrying.

Cheers, Phil

So do we have a definitive answer yet, as to the maximum penalty for failing to display a numberplate?

no plate is £30... but lots of money saved, potentially. Just don't have your PH stickers on the back window now.

I'd've thought that you'd get penalised less if caught without any than if caught with this kind of device.

How about leaving the plates visible and if you do get flashed and receive a portrait then fit/remove some decoration (stickers, badges, scraches, etc.) so that you can say it wasn't you it must have been a clone as the car in the photo has e.g. no Pistonheads sticker, or no towbar, etc.

Do you have to have the plate visible at all times, or only when it is being driven or on the public highway.

How about an LCD display configured to the same size as a number plate showing perfectly legal characters that swiches off when you press a switch (or via a signal from your radar detector). It would also switch off when you lock up the car so no-one can clone your reg (anti-theft angle as well!)

Exiges on the evo forum got done for this the other day. Fined and threatened that if he was caught another 2 times his car would be given a Q plate.

What if your (kitcar?) already has a Q plate?

to them

Anyway, issuing a Q plate just encourages them to take the plates off again

EDIT: Not accusing him or yourself of talking boolshit, more like the policeman making it up as he goes along to try and scare ya

Excellent info - could you find out how much he got fined, and what the offence was (technically speaking)?

That Q-plate thing sounds suspiciously like boolshit to me, but if that's the worst they can do then that's *fine* by me!

Q-plates cost more to insure, so it is an indirect fine that lasts as long as you have the car....
