Drove past a perfectly white new (cost!!) van in a layby yesterday. Backdoors closed but too very small high level windows folded inwards with two recessed cctv sytle cameras(not laser type??). I assume this is some form of visual driven safty camera(maybe on test as it was near the Derbyshire police HQ).

Anyway if it was working I'll definately be getting a NIP as I'd just speeded up to clear a van potentialy pulling out as he gained on a lorry in the left lane.

Questions;

Do mobile "Safety" camera have to be highly visible etc

Does anyone know of any undetectable ie visual road side devises (not car ie Vascar)

Well I sense an inpending purchase of electronic gear including a blinder. If they don't play fair neither will I. Although I won't do that till I get nicked by an unfair camera. Visible and police are fair game. If they use common sense.

This little incident prompted me to get a radar/laser detector and a blinder.

1 month later I wrote my car off. Damn

it's stuff like this which has swayed me towards countermeasures on the car too... especially when reading the proposed speeding law changes this morning. all i'll need soon is the sidewinders on the wings to take car of vascar pursuits!

It's worth mentioning that I wasn't in a 30 or 40 zone at the time. Yes, they nicked me for 58 mph in a 50 zone. Somewhat harsh.

I got done the same way, I've just got a snooper s5, do these mobile van units use laser?

Yes, they use a laser gun with a camera mounted on it. They aim at your numberplate, as can be seen from the cross hairs in photo above.

IMO a detector is no defense because if it detects laser you have already been caught. I have a Bel 990 and have tested it against a mobile trap which I knew was there. I drove towards the trap and the Bel 990 gave me a laser alert at exactly the same moment as the Target 850 jammer in my front plate went off.

thats a bit worrying, thought they gave more warning of laser than that.

I want to get a blinder but can't seem to find anywhere to fit it on my car (Ferrari 348). There are grills in the front but they have metal plating behind them.

You get more of a warning when there is other traffic on the road being lasered. If I'm on an empty road I'm esp. paranoid for this reason - no warning. If there's a car ahead I'll get a beep from his 'attack of the laser' and probably see him testing his seatbelt locking mechanism!

The really worrying thing about that photo is that they shot you from behind. My LASER jammers will be absolutely useless in this case. Do I need another pair for the back of my car...?

re: laser blinder

how about one module on front, one on the back? my car has pop-up headlights, so all aiming will be on the plates anyway...

Call me duffer (...thanks) but what sort of laser blinder are we on about? do they work? - I have geodesy and V1, V1 has several times blurted out a laser warnibg - so slow me down and sure enough, usually about a mile ahead, there is PC polaroid snapping off his dodgy frames - however, couple of other times, no traffic ahead to cause plod to give me this decent and fair warning - so a 'blinder' might be a good thing.
I'm all for counter measures - dont let the facist regime grind us down. Things really are getting bad - saw new volvo T5 sitting on the 'police vehicles only' layby on the M3 last week. Either a fast Grandpa stopped for a roadside picknic, or Big Brother' has found a way to spend more of his ill-gotten spoils. Why are these police forces not out catching flipping criminals!!! - are their mothers proud of them?

Rant over - where do I get a blinder?

Do they work, will I get pulled when plod signal goes haywire?

yep thats the one, apparently they do work.

They make a noise, you slow down & switch it off, plod gets an error code on his laser gun and tries to get another reading by which time you are within the limit.

There was a test done on speedtrap bible & it worked.

I seem to recall that there is one blinder that gives front and rear protection - or was this a flight of alcohol induced fantasy?

I think a Bel model does front and rear, but had a poor review from the uk speed traps site (www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk).

This is not a problem however, as you can order extra laser heads for the blinder, costs an extra 100 quid if I remember.

It might not have been a mobile speed van. It could have been an A.N.P.R. (automatic number plate reader) van which is used to combat traffic and crime offences. Usually there are a fleet of catchers further along the road.

Every vehicle that goes past, has its registartion checked and any markers attached to that number are brought up on the screen in the van within seconds. this is then transferred by radio to the stoppers/catchers further on along the road.

It is mainly used to look for stolen vehicles or those which are being used regularly in criminal acts. It does state if the vehicle is taxed or not and whether a V5 has been issued (been seriously damaged at some point) which is a good starter for picking up ringers.

Not all unmarked vans are bad news ( unless you are a scrote)

Thanks for that info madcop. Ultimately I'll have to wait and see. Hopefully that is all it was, the local ""saftey"" camera unit wern't opperating on that road I've found out so if it was a speed trap it would be the local police operating outside the hyp etc scheme. Time will tell.

I am still thinking of a geodesy and new bell LRC 100 but fixed cameras I'm reasonably happy with the mark 1 eyeball along with marked and unmarked cars. It's only the hidden cameras and devious plod that make me consider eolectronics.

Errm, how would that work then, I thought the detector had to be within the focal area of the laser to pick it up?
