Where there's blame...

Northumbria Police are investigating an incident in which one of its Panda drivers screeched to a halt on the pavement narrowly missing a young mother and her small children.

Anne-Marie Graham was walking along the street in Byker when she heard the car approaching and whisked her toddler out of the way of the oncoming car.

Now she's considering lodging a claim for compensation. She commented this week "I am still scared to go out of the house, especially when I see police cars. I see a psychiatric nurse every week who is trying to help me get over my fear. The doctor has put me on diazepam for the stress."

It's a sensitive issue for residents of the area in which a woman was recently left in a coma after being hit by a police car. Linda Donaldson is still in hospital. She was hit when using a pedestrian crossing.

In another incident a local man died after the car he was driving hit a bus whilst it was being pursued by police. Terry Craggs, father of the dead 20 year old said "I am still waiting for an explanation."

Allegedly... On the other hand, maybe we're becoming a notion of opportunists with friendly local doctors signing letters for 10%... IMHO.

Perhaps the toddler could claim for whiplash

Could be worse ... we could live in the US. Try this:

According to police in Woodinville, Wash., when Anita Durrett, 42,
tried to speed away in her car with $266 worth of groceries shoplifted from an Albertson's store, an employee pursued her in his car, and when Durrett lost control and crashed at 90 mph, her 9-year-old daughter, riding in the front seat, was killed. Though Durrett has been convicted of vehicular manslaughter, she filed a wrongful-death lawsuit in May against Albertson's, claiming that they should not have chased her. [Seattle Times, 4-16-02]

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't Byker a "economically-challenged" area? Therefore the "lady" involved is probably a single mum? Therefore she probably looks at this as an opportunity to get a bit of cash.

Breathe deeply.....count to ten.....oh

Anyone remember that Simpsons episode when Lionel Huts (the attorney) is talking to Bart after he got run over and hears an ambulance go by and says basically bugger another case missed? We are hearing more and more cases of this ambulance chasing mentality and the US view of sue anyone for anything. Common sense has gone out the window.

(You can tell I've had a bad few days a work!!)

I can't believe the above is reportable. The explanation is his dead son should have bloody pulled over.

Local Council just re-aligned a road, partly due to a weak bridge, and partly due to there being a number of bad accidents on the old road due to some nasty bends.

Lovely new road - wide, straight, higher speed limit than the old road, and (probably) safer but...

A local resident sent a letter that had been dropped through the whole estates letterboxes.

It was from a solicitors practice stating that the residents were entitled to compensation for additional noise, disturbance, etc. The firm would take it on 'no win no fee' and that all costs would be met by the Council!

The new road is probably about 20m nearer the estate at the nearest point, but on average is probably further away on the new alignment!

And they are encouraging people to claim with comments which must be bordering on untrue?

Aaaaaarrrrggg!

So if the council end up paying out for the houses nearer the road, can they claim money back from those further from the road!?!

Cheers, Phil

Oh god, yes, I hate this, just a bunch of 'unfortunate' screechy carping scumbags who have been wooed by the 'Blames direct' culture: just a more reliable way of securing a windfall than the lottery, I think. Anyway, all these accidents and court cases do is create more statistics, more rules, more restrictions, and more excuses to extract cash from the hardworking majority of the population.

So if a woman with a child comes from a run down area she's "probably a single mother", and is therefore "probably...looking for a bit cash".

I'm afraid that those sort of assumptions aren't very nice ones. One of my cousins had the misfortune to have her husbad abandon her, and so is now a single mother in the North East. She has never had to sign on though, despite the fact she's struggled for many years now.

All credit to her, however, the question is if in this situation would she be looking to earn a little cash? (Sorry, I mean get some compensation for her injury) Most probably not, as she is a half decent member of society.
