Whilst in the post office this morning I heard an advert on local radio about speed cameras, advertising the URL www.cambssafetycameras.co.uk .

I'm grateful to them for spending my council tax on advertising where they're putting the new high visibility cameras because I usually drive round with my eyes shut... but that's not what bothered me.

What got my goat was the woman's voice chanting "Safety Cameras Save Lives" with hypnotic background music.

Arrrghhh! The subliminal messaging is working, I now say a small prayer to safety cameras when I see them, thanking them for keeping me alive to drive another day.

To prove the point try logging onto the Essex Police Website www.essex.police.co.uk. Type in road safety and read as follows:-

Road accidents remain the greatest cause of unnatural death and injury in Essex.Between April 1 1997 and March 31 this year, 92 people died in accidents on the road, three more than the previous year.

Casualties have increased by 4.4 per cent despite the increased use of speed cameras and other initiatives, including four new laser cameras.

I couldnt believe that they are actually admitting that after putting cameras all over the County the accident rate is rising.

I live in Essex and have written to a local newspaper and my MP. Any other Essex members should consider a similar message.

Well, the speed camera in the roadworks on the M621 in Leeds (50 reduced to 30), loads of signs, big white marks on the road & painted yellow certainly is working.
Me, 30mph, lane one, Saturday afternoon, light traffic, all three lanes open.
Numpty young woman in lane two >30mph, Renault Clio, paying no f^&king attention whatsoever, two flashes. Pulls into lane one, undertakes a car & back into lane 2.

Pissed my pants, f%^king nearly!

Yeah, I drive through those at least twice a day - the cameras are permanently flashing - making a fortune on that stretch - sorry , saving lots of lives!

Ah, mentioned that one before but couldnt remember the URL. A .co.uk registered name indicates a commercial company and not a Charity or non-profit making company. In fact if you wish to check the rules see :

www.nic.uk/rules/rup3.html

Directly says that a .co.uk address is for "commercial enterprises only". So glad to see that at least Cambridgshire is prepared to be counted then as a cash making business....

Cheers,

Paul

The thing is, in the right places they probably can save lives - the classic example being outside a school or at roadworks etc (and only active in daytime!), but by spewing them all over the place and then being so bl**dy misleading ...

Ach, preaching to the converted here, no need to go on.

Not at all, IMO. I don't think there's any proof at all that they have any sustained positive impact in any single instance. Their influence is insignificant against the background statistical noise.

We need complete abandonment &/or destruction of all gatsos. Nothing less will suffice.

Maybe, but in some areas many people do indeed drive unsafely fast, becasue it looks and feels like areas where a higher speed is safe enough. So in these cases something to slow people down is appropriate. Cameras may not be the best solution though.

Pointless if they're hidden, too, the thing is to slow people down in these areas not fleece them.

There's some "Safety Camera Ahead" signs on the M6 around Stafford that could do with some decorating
