Here's a thought...

Speed bumps - oops, sorry, 'safety cushions' - are supposed to be placed on roads with hazards. My advanced driving teacher (God bless his trilby) used to reckon that sounding your horn was appropriate behaviour for a hazard.

Perhaps we should be complying with good practice and giving a gentle horn warning as we traverse the obstacle courses that litter the roads - in the interest of safety, of course...

TELL ME IF I'M WRONG
At certain times you can not sound your horn and flashing of your lights is the warning signal. This is the correct code I believe, but not the reverse as is common practice

I think the HC says that horn warnings are illegal between 1130 and 0730, but that a headlight flash is OK as a warning at any time of day.

The only problem with flashing as you hump is that it won't wake Mrs Miggins at No33 up, interrupt the Archers or scare her cat. And she's the one who believes there's a hazard outside her house and who wrote to the council and asked to be humped.

The same theory applies, of course, to roadside police cashpoints. They're always at accident blackspots, so you better hoot for the hazard...

As I understand it its illegal to sound your horn in a built-up area at night (and I can't remember exactly how 'night' was defined) except to avert an accident.

I guess it would be legal if you thought the speed hump was about to jump out in front of you?
