What kind of insurance dent does 3 points make to your wallet? Can anyone tell me of what happened to their premiums after a small 3 pt infringement.

I got done for doing 46mph in a 30mph area, I got a standard SP30. My renewal premium was £490, when I told them about the SP30 it went up to £550. So wasn't such a big increase...

BTW I got the ticket at 2:45am when the roads were deserted!!! I guess plod had nothing better to do.

Many companies disregard 3pts now if nothing else to declare. Exception appears to be some motorcycle policies.

that's a crock if your lot did that. The general rule is 6pts = +25%, 9pts=+50%.

I got an SP30 for 57 in a 30 and another SP30 for 37 in a 30 and when I informed my insurance company they said it wouldnt affect my premium.
It never made a difference to either my car or bike insurance even when I changed companies.
This was for speeding in 96 but the points only went off my licence last year.

If so, hertsbiker, what would be the effect of a short-term ban?

some don't seem to care - I've been told.
Some won't do anything until next renewal, where they will then possibly add 50%, or simply refuse cover.

Guess you'll need to tell tham and wait for an answer. Not sure if you need to tell them immediately, or when you next renew?

Sorry can't help any more than that.

Normally 3 pts wont make any diference.. insurers are aware of the fact that everyone does it its just that more are being done for it now.. I'm in the business and I cant remember the last time one SP30 on its own ( so long as you dont have accidents on your record ) affected a premium. If your insurer trys it on then just move on to another. Oh and you should tell them now rather than wait till renewal, they'd delight in chucking out a claim for that if you dont.

Ok typical example... Premium of £228 with no points doesnt change with 3pts... 6pts = £250 .. 9 pts goes up to £376.. just a guide.. and no I'm not gunno do 'what if' quotes for all u guys !! call your own brokers !!

I got about an eight quid increase for three points. Not a lot to worry about.

I'm with Norwich Union Direct who ignore my 6 pts. I think their decision is based on the type of offense and size of the fine, rather than the cumulation of points.

I got 3pts on an SP30 (46 in a 30, unmarked Escort... god damn it) in 1996. It cost me no more than £20 on my premium then, and the last couple of years I've been told (by pretty much every insurer I've had a quote from) that it makes no difference now.

Shouldn't worry about it too much...
