Well, according to the Essex Safety Camera "Partnership" they are with "public demand" for new cameras running at 20 applications per month!

Once again opponents and critics are "in the minority" etc etc.

The big problem with this is the opinion

"NOT IN MY BACK YARD"

Look in your local paper. There will at some time in the last six months be a petition or letter or article that relates to residents of a certain area complaining about speed in 'their back yard'

I can tell you from experience that the same people that complain about other peoples speed are less concerned about their own.
WHETHER IN THEIR BACK YARD OR YOURS

As long as everybody else drives slowly, thats fine by the complainer!

Can we cancel out public demand by writing 40 letters asking for them to be removed??

They've won the propoganda war tho, haven't they - they are now SAFETY cameras, not speed enforcement. Ft this place meakes me

But even they admit its "inappropriate speed for the conditions" , not just blind adherence to the limits...

Can we find another planet please, - this one's run by ws!!

Can't swear on this forum unfortunately.
I was thinking of legal ways to boycot cameras. I is getting one of those plates that you flick the switch and it blanks out the rear number plate and drive through at 150mph.
Suckers.

I've actually written to the woman running this campaign and her ambition is to see the whole of the uk covered in cameras, I tried to find some logic to her reasoning and was met by a wall of indifferance and a dogged belief that she was on some kind of holy quest.....god help us all

Yes I am having a bad day!!

I hate the sight of those nasty grey/black/yellow boxes. I'm a f:censured:g mature adult, able to vote, drink, fk, smoke, make my own decisons, but these interferring zealots, single cause socio-warriors with their ingrained holier than thou attitude really, really p:censorde:s me off! I know when conditions are ok for travelling quickly, I can process information from what is around me - the only time I lose concentration is when I get stuck in traffic with the zombies who don't know how to overtake a fr******n tractor thats doing 25 mph.

So, no,Mr "I know better than you" Government Jobsworth don't go telling me when its ok to do 60 or 50 or 70 or whatever - I'll make that decision for myself thank you very ta and trust that everyone else who has a license to drive has the same or better (and I'm not that good a driver) ability than me. If they can't, then take their by licenses away and if I fail, then tough tits on me! Make it a REAL privelege to have a driving licence, not a right, and the accident rate would dramatically reduce, the congestion would go and and and and - oh bs wheres me coffee n cigs??

I'll get me coat........

Councils will always respond to calls by a few to erect new speed cameras but won't respond to calls by many to take them down. This people are public servants so they should have to listen to entire public opinion.

However I am sure that even if there was three times as many calls to take speed cameras down than put them up it wouldn't make a difference.

yeah our local paper had the article. What lies! no one I know wants them, so who are these "people" ?? the residents of a mental institution?

I don't beleive it. We are being sold so much crap on this topic. Never before has there been such a wicked attack on the freedom of ordinary people. Bliar will be remembered as the man who made Britain a Police State for motorists, while increasing teenage drug use and pregnancy. Well done Bliar.

I always like these "78% of motorists" polls.

Depends, as always, on how you ask the quesion. Essentially the same question, but you would get a different answer. It's like something out of "Yes, Minister". Both could be used to answer the isse raised in the article.

----------

Do you agree that, in the light of overwhelming evidence, safety cameras are a help to prevent the needless and appalling deaths of young children which are caused by speeding motorists who openly flout the law?

or

Do you agree that the deliberate hiding of speed cameras behind roadsigns and foliage can only be designed to raise revenue from passing motorists?

NIMBYs. Get round our way. The good people of a parish near us campaigned for traffic calming....to try and get rid of the School Mums driving through their village to the school. As if there was another route.

They even wanted Speed Tax Cameras - until the local plod (nice bloke actually) explained that Speed Cameras catch local residents. No matter what the council thought it would be locals on the film. People don't travel to other people's villages and housing estates to speed - they do it in their own, by and large. That put the kybosh on that one.

I'd like one IN MY BACK YARD..

..an old knackered minibus nearly had me and the doggy this morning as it was proceeding though the village at over 60 (in the 30 limit)

Matt.

why can't people realise that there IS a place for speed cameras, around schools etc, but not on NSL highway/non built up areas for revenue reasons...
