Did anyone pass through Battle, East Sussex on Saturday morning on the A271? There was what looked like a speed census taking place using the parallel, rubber tube, pressure sensors across the road... but unusually (it was the first time I've seen one) there was a display board relaying your speed, all mobile by the looks of it. Someone next to the board was taking notes. Any idea what was going on and has anyone ever seen something similar?

Er..no, but Battle Stations last night on C4 featured the Tiger Tank - arguably the most formidable armoured vehicle of WW2. Drive past in one of those next time and see how long the fluorescent jacket brigade stay seated in their picnic chairs.

I thought they were for counting traffic. They are everywhere round my way. There's no speed thingy though and IIRC the speed display things don't need the rubber thingies. Very vague I know but "thingy" is such a useful word

I would guess they might be doing a survey to see if they need a speed camera installed at that spot.

Similar thing on the edge of Northampton this morning with a guy with a speed gun linked to a big digital display showing you how fast you are going.

You mean to see how much money a tax camera would make.

The Parish Council did the same thing in my village, noting down the speeds of vehicles as they were dispayed on the sign. That was ages ago, no indication of any more limits.

Am I the only one who loves to set those automatic warning signs off? There used to be one in Gainsborough, Lincs where you could get a good speed up, there's one now at our local Tescos (Amersham). It's compulsory to set them off!! (unless there is someone standing there with a clipboard ... I think I'd be cautious then JIC it's some kind of plain clothes tax collectors).

There was one on a dual carriageway with a stupid and probably dangerous 30 limit. It was on the approach to a roundabout. I was the passenger in an Impreza that managed to record a 3 figure speed Still would have been able to stop for the roundabout too.
