Thinking about getting a speed detector
Isn't that normally called a speedometer?
Or did you mean a speed camera detector?
If you're going GPS based (which I doubt if your thinking of France) then you're looking at the Origin Blue i or the Road Angel. (Depends what features you want.)
If you're going non-GPS then the Valentine 1 always seems to get the best reviews. But it's not cheap - over £500 I seem to recall.
looking myself also. They all look pretty useless from the investigation I have carried out so far.
Suggest you look at a laser diffuser as this will PROTECT you against the temporary static traps (all laser now), for radar detection, most people complain of false alarms etc but a GPS will warn you of each location a camera is installed (but not wether it is active).

I bought a Bel 990 in teh last couple of weeks. Took it down to Tunbridge Wells at th weekend, and it picked up most of tehcamersa on teh way. the one or two it didn't, I assume were inactive. Bought it on the internet from www.radar-guys.com. They sent it from the US within three days, at 60% o fthe UK price.
Hi
If you going to France (see my post re speeding in France) you have to have a "covert" detector. The Bel 966 Radar Detector is the dogs *********. You can actually hide the main unit behind your front bumper (as long as it's plastic or fibreglass) it doesn't effect the sensitivity at all. The other part of the unit (the size of a match box) sits under your dash. Totally invisible to any plod.
Also worth getting a Laser Blinder as well (also called a Snooper SLD 920 Laser Jammer). This sits in the grills of the car and jams laser (to a certain distance).
FOr 100% coverage have a look at the Road Angel - which is an advance GPS system that also allows you to use the laser jammer in conjunction with it (well it will very soon) www.blackspot.com

Not cheap but the best units and I've had loads of them !!

Just one word of warning though,
VASCAR.
Thats the one we need to be VERY nervous of!
Not the static cameras, they can be seen (GPS, BEL, SNOOPER etc etc),
then there is GATSO, you have to be pretty fast .... Mr PC only needs two even readings ....
deceleration from 120mph is slow compared to Mr PC's finger on the GATSO trigger, I bet he could still nab you doing over 100mph, remember, you still need to react to the snoopers (or whatever you have) alarm, by that time the Mr PC has already clicked his trigger at least once (First Reading) , hence the alarm !.. By the time your brain computes this and you react, second click on the trigger... makes you wonder huh, can you Beat the finger ?? I doubt it ..
GOOD LUCK AND BEAT THE FINGER!

Woof, is this a realistic avenue to explore?
Will the US one work over here as they are quite a bit cheaper.
